What is dark urge
Depending on the answer I might play as dark urge for my next playthrough so I would like with as little spoilers as possible so I'm going to give two possibilities that I can think of of what the dark urge is if it is one of the two then please only say it is this one without going on a whole paragraph of spoilers. Also I am aware that it is related to bhaal but that is not what I'm asking.
A- dark urge is essentially a spirit and if we play as dark urge in the game we are essentially someone possessed by the spirit meaning there were many people possessed by dark urge before and there will be more after us. So dark urge is just one part of our personality it is not who our character is.
B- dark urge is a person from a previous game that we get to play as in this game and the only reason we may act as we please it's because dark urge doesn't remember who he is.

Dark Urge is a Bhaalspawn with amnesia who has uncontrollable violent thoughts

not a spoiler since it's revealed fairly early on

maybe i should have phrased it diffrently but essentially my issue that i want to know if choosing dark urge means that the character has an in depth backstory like karlach who was sent in hell or if dark urge essentially means that i am playing the basic blank character with nothing special but there are added events because they may act badly. i know you said it was a bhaalspawn but i don't know what that is.

Dark Urge has a back story, yes

a Bhaalspawn is basically a child of Bhaal, the God of Murder

as this implies Dark Urge is a very disturbed character which you can play out as embracing their nature or rejecting it

the Dark Urge has a unique history, unlike the default custom Tav, which much like other origin companions' ties into the main story and setting

So, let me point you here to this page. It contains spoilers, but you have to click on them to reveal them.

Never played it, and what makes me reluctant is

Without an exploit, it seems his first victim, a tiefling bard whose singing voice I really love, is gonna die at his hands. Can't be avoided.

It's not an "exploit" if the developers accounted for it which they did.

Dark Urge has the deepest, most complex back story. At the beginning you have no memories of your past or who you are, only an overwhelming desire to spill blood. Your main quest in the game is really to find out your past. Dark Urge is the way the game was meant to be played. The other Origin characters are just following standard companion quests.

Without spoiling too much, the Durge is an origin character that constantly has thoughts of h0m0cide and torture. The Urge can either let these thoughts torment and then consume them whole or fight them. The choice is yours.

The Dark Urge is an Origin character with unique dialog options that isn't bound to a specific class or race.

Your Dark Urge could be a Halfling Sorcerer, a Dwarfen Warlock, an Elfen Monk or a Human Paladin.

The Dark Urge's story will play out regardless of what you choose to play as.

The Dark Urge is a Bhaalspawn.

Dark Urge is a boundless love and tribute to BG1-2
Only the Slayer Form is a bit weak for a 5e.

I have completed the game as Dark Urge as I consider it the only real canon PC of BG3.

The answer to your question is it's mostly option B. Also, yes, the Durge has a backstory interwoven into the game, but mostly comes to fruition in the final act of the game.

he's the BBEG of the game forced into main character status. In the tav playthrough you find his corpse because one of the villains kills him, but a d-urge playthrough assumes he survived.

Yeah, teh 'evil' path in BG3? Its kinda weak sauce if you ask me. The games version of evil is more like a cheap, toxic jerk who gets his kicks from squirrel-kicking, rather than a master of manipulation and subterfuge. It's like they skimmed the surface of what 'evil' could be but didn't dive deep into the complexities. And their choice of Bhaal? Man, there are so many other Faerunian evil gods they could've picked for a richer, more layered kind of bad. It's a missed opportunity to show the dark and devious side of evil in a more nuanced way.
