College of Valor can use medium armor and shields, College of Swords can use scimitars. College of Lore is more of a pure caster and can use "cutting words"
You should be able to see what you are on your character sheet
the two melee ones are confusing. One of them has a bunch of 'battle master' type tricks, like shooting someone and teleporting to them to chop them up, which is pretty handy.
But this is really important: the college of lore, the caster bard, does NOT GET another attack at level 6. So you are giving up an attack to get little more than access to a small # of additional spells and very minor other perks.
