You'll also be able to reap the rewards you sowed in Act II by defeating Roah Moonglow in the Guild.
You could try thieving from Ferg Drogher right when you get to Rivington (just don't use Darkness just yet, for some reason it CTD's the game if you drop concentration on it). Have one caster cast Guidance, another cast Enhance Ability - DEX (or wear Graceful Cloth or Thievery Gloves), and a third cast Fog Cloud, then let your gigabuffed thief do the work.
Same thing with Popper (although I just max his approval early with some of the rewards from Lann Tarv).
Other than that, it's the occasional general merchant, and most of them lack anything of particular note.
-----
The reason I mentioned getting merchants to max approval is that with a +9 Persuasion, you can get a -119% discount, which is enough to almost minimize the costs of buying items. +13 shoots it to -150% (and frankly I think that's overcapped), and from there you literally cannot lose money bartering with a trader.
The herb vendor just before the drawbridge, top floor above Danthelon.
In the city proper of baldurs gate there are like 7+ vendors that are easy pickings. I'd say half can be put to sleep with a spell slot 1 sleep. Just shut their door and they are alone. Don't forget to hover over signs attached to buildings to find them.
I am clumsy, and the more steps, the more I am liable to screw something up though! ;)
Yeah, that's the Rivington one is the one I already mentioned. I also found another one in the Act 3 - the potion merchant above the Harper hideout.
I am not in the city yet, but I am looking forward to it! ;)
P.S. So Sleep works? I've been using Hold Monster.
Sleep 100% works, but if the vendor becomes an ally you won't be able to use it.
There are a handful of merchants with between 10 hp and like 44 hp so go into turn based mode/sleep/pickpocket. There are also the gnomes beneath rivington, but thieving from them is a challenge.
