depends on the angle since with some feats and abilities, I think you might see ways Charisma can end up impacting AC, so it's not always Dex. Gaining (or reducing) AC in 5E is harder than in earlier D&D's. Damage ranges tend higher. Player HP is about the same as it was in AD&D though, so that's interesting. That makes more an argument for CON being the most important secondary attribute (for survival)
That's true, get your gigachad muscle mage this way. xD
Like you haven't done it. What's the point of having a 20 STR when you're always juiced on Elixirs of Cloud Giant Strength? That's a lot of free points to distribute.
- dex affects how fast you go in combat (first to take a turn if higher, usually)
- your dex skills, like slight of hand and stealth
- dex saving throws, like trying to walk on grease/ice
- spell saving throws, some use dex to avoid partial damage
That could be said about a LOT of stuff in this game.
.. STR is kind of a joke because giant str elixir
.. DEX is kind of a joke because gauntlets + vigilance elixir
.. CON is kind of a joke because amulet (end game) or armor +2 (mid game)
.. INT is kind of a joke because the circlet
.. WIS is kind of a joke unless you're a WIS-caster
the "least joke" would probably be CHA because there are no easy ways to circumvent it coupled with the fact it is beneficial to many classes like casters + paladins (and alike). Still, there are also a lot of classes who don't care like fighters.
considering the insane abundance of stuff, you can probably max out 2 stats, make everything else a dump and then use them elixirs + "set to" items.
For those who can wear heavier armor, dex is not that important. Just make sure you take the Alert feat. There is also an item that boosts Dex in Act 2 (sold by the merchant in the Githiyanki creche .
If you need to go ranged with a strength based character, you can get the returning pike from the merchant in the Goblin Camp in Act 1
