Is Minthara an Oathbreaker or not?
Okay, okay, this is me from what I noticed from BG3 and it doesn't make any sense. There's a character named Minthara who's an Oath of Vengence Paladin who is working with a cult called the Absolute in a game where you can recruit in your game or kill her if you so choose depending on your gameplay. Now this is me when you choose to be a Paladin you can be Oath of Vengence which I love to play as where you can deliver divine wrath on those who do evil while protecting the weak, Oath of Devotion, and another oath that I cannot remember at the moment, but anyways, Minthara is an Oath of Vengence, and it says: " You have set aside even your own purity to right wrongs and deliver justice to those who have committed the most grievous sins." The Cult of the Absoulte is evil in the game, and if you were to do anything evil like killing an innocent person, sighing with evil doers or working with them, or letting an innocent person be taken, you'd become an Oath Breaker because you have broken a promise you took. It doesn't make sense to me that Minthara has her oath which is not broken, but if I were to do anything evil, I'd become an oath breaker which is sorta one-sided if you ask me. Maybe I am missing something about her that's easy to explain, but still. The cult is evil, anything you do that's evil as a Paladin will make you an Oathbreaker, and also atone for your sins by taking to the FIRST OathBreaker if you so choose. You do choose to go down that path, you use your Oath Breaker abilities for good or evil. Minthara doesn't have one dark ability at all. I'm going to bring this up to the BG3 forums soon about this.

Stop trying to insert sense into this writing.

Minthara comes from Drow culture. She has a very different idea about what needs avenging and on whom.

You're right, it's a major re-interpretation of the subclass as set forth in the Player's Handbook. She shouldn't really be a Vengeance Paladin, but I don't think it's an oversight. I'd guess the reason is more technical/meta: Larian wanted her to be a paladin, didn't want her to be an oathbreaker, and there are only three oaths in the game. Of those three, Vengeance is the least inappropriate for her.

I'm not an expert on oaths--I'm mainly familiar with PHB content--but from what little I know, the Oath of Conquest would probably be a better fit for her. However, adding that would have been more programming work.

I don't actually know Larian's reasons, but this explanation seems the most logical to me.

Must keep in mind she is a loath sworn drow and has an oath of vengeance so her oath is in tact so long has she brings vengeance to those who wrong loath and her sworn and such, she is kinda akin to the oathbreaker knight in the game but instead of being blinded she is fully aware of her oath and what it means, and thus is happy with it

For my second run, a co-op with my wife, I made a Drow Loath sworn Vengeance Paladin. We haven't gotten very far, but I am quite curious how the oath will be handled in the subtext of the game. As a Loath Sworn Drow, Vengeance or not, it can't be held to the same oath as a Paladin of Helm, for example.

I'm pretty much expecting the "oath" will be broken rather quickly and the true Loth sworn Paladin will emerge as an Oathbreaker Paladin.

I will be handled different since not her sadly, like some said makes no sense but not in the way they are thinking the player just cant do that you know how it goes npcs get special loopholes that players should get also since fits but limited design

Works on pen and paper but not in the game world -sigh
