But if you meant Gortash or Orin? Also doesn't ultimately matter. Just, uh, don't try to kill the former during the big gathering when you first meet him unless you're feeling mighty confident.
Now how you get it from Raphael ... well that is a key decision of the game, n'c'est pas?
You can't free him until you cross the 'point of no return' that leads to Endgame. Do as many other quests as you please, in whatever order.

Take the companion who knows that enemy best with you for extra dialogue or alternate solutions...
Examples; Karlach will get really pissed off if you don't let her fight/kill Gortash with you.
and Raphael involves some dubious moral choices during the quest, so choose appropriately.
("Good" aligned characters might not approve of some choices.)
It is not that difficult and the challenge is quite fun.
I agree with you, but it's the most difficult fight in the game by far, and most players really probably should steer clear on their first run.
