What if... tadpoled puffs puffs?
*something cracked*
You can play Honour Mode. That is no issue. Or rather - why not just wing it without the one savegame limitation? Doing Honour Mode without dying is one thing. Doing Honour Mode and continue after dying is a viable option you can enjoy as alternative to Tactician.
What I like most about Honour Mode is that there are indeed some interesting gameplay changes which Tactician does not offer.
Therefore, why not?
Then someone stood on a trap while I was trying to disarm them and the whole place lit right up and killed everybody
So my advice for what it’s worth is split the party and go alone to disarm them when you know there’s traps
Yep.
Standard.
I mean that is what you normally do - the halfling rogue goes ahead and check for traps, then the dwarf follows with a ten foot pole before the rest of the party follows.
Do NOT fight the 3 intellect devourers with only Shadowheart as backup. You can actually, through a succession of small jumps, climp the cliff near the cove, right before that encounter, which allows you to get Gale and Lae'Zel and reach lvl 3 through exploration XP alone. Only then should you consider taking your first fights.
I just fought them today in Honor mode with only Shadowheart as back up. The easiest way is to stealth to the upper platform and then watch the patrolling one. When it walks close to the one next to the pod turn on Turn-based mode. This will freeze them in place and allow you to make an action while they are stuck in place. Launch a Firebolt at the purple pod thing causing an explosion that will most likely kill two of them outright. Then just kill the 3rd one.
It's an unnecessary risk nonetheless. The whole point of Honour mode is to avoid as much as possible risky fights until you are strong enough to do them.
I guess. I never felt at risk in that fight.
The second, make sure you can tank. A sorcerer is actually a pretty good class for that battle. With draconic, dex16, a shield, blade ward, and the shield spell, you can easily tank that battle with the few healing potions you have. Try hanging back and using extended range magic missiles to soften.
That's the best way to power through the early levels. Once you've got enough gear and levels to start multiclassing just respec to whatever you want.
Kill the looters near the Dank Crypt by shooting the rope holding a weight above them. It'll leave only 2 left that you can finish off with ease.
Drop down the newly created hole. When they open the door, use a firebolt to blow up the oil barrel. That fight will be super easy afterwards. Shadowheart in melee range or your sorcerer tank, Asterion to sneak attack, and Gale can magic missile anyone that still has a lot of hitpoints.
Take all the weapons away from the skeletons. When you push the button awakening them, they should be cake as they only really use ray of frost, cloud, and silence. Shadowheart's mace does double damage.
The Emerald Grove battle you have enough allies to make it also cake. At this point you're level 3 and can respec with Withers.
Level 3 builds are mostly mediocre, but your sorcerer can start using twin cast ice knife followed by quickened blade cloud.
Bard with gloves of archery (purchased in the goblin camp) can do flourish with hand crossbows from Dammon.
Barbarian with bear heart makes an excellent tank. That's almost a solo class early game.
Effective use of blade cloud is a very good way of clearing goblins and getting to level 4.
Getting to level 5 is a much tougher animal. Take it slow and clear out the gnolls using a tank and blade clouds. Keep casters far enough back they don't get attacked. The paladin fight with Karlach is a bit of a tough one, but you can res chain beat it by keeping characters close together and throwing healing potions. Use a bear barbarian to keep from one shot dying from radiant damage.
You need to dismiss and regather your entire group every time you get inspiration experience. It adds up really fast. Use a guide to make sure you get as much as possible.
You can get an easy minotaur kill by dropping into the underdark from the shattered sanctum and immediately destroying the globe. Then kill it as soon as it breaks the gate down.
Kill all the redcaps and mephits in the bog.
To kill the harpies, just use calm emotions and blade cloud the one singing. It'll sit there until concentration lost or dead. Blade ward works great here as well. If your primary character is elf, half elf, or drow, you can just resist the singing as well. Shadowheart and Asterion are good here.
Have Gale drink the Gut sleeping potion. This will allow you to isolate and kill her without turning the goblin camp hostile. 2 spellcasters with blade cloud can erase the courtyard. Finish off all goblins except the hobgoblin and Minthara. Make sure to destroy war drums on the first turn.
Once you're done with all this, you should be at or very close to level 5. Just kill a few spiders, get a few more inspiration, and the rest of Act 1 should be a cakewalk.
Do not underestimate the extended range sorcerer ability.
Magic Missile (+1 extra missile) with shriek going and extra lightning damage for each missile will blast away a lot of your problems. There's a lot of food in the stockpile to help you long rest a lot early to get shriek back. I would fast travel out and do the easier encounters topside after getting those items before going back to the underdark.
You need to pick dual wield to have both the sword and staff in hand. There's a build guide video for this setup online to maximize the class setup for exploiting this combo which is a warlock/sorcerer.
Also at the very beginning you can redo Shart's spells and pick command and have the cambion drop the flaming great sword (and then run away with it rather than fight) which is really good up until late ACT 2 / early ACT 3.
You definitely want to be a high level before pushing past there, though, as the bulette stands between it and the myconoid colony.
Everburn Blade is only mediocre because it has no enhancement. Much better off taking the Githyanki Greatsword from the patrol and giving to Laezel if you're going to try to go into late act 2 with act 1 weapons.
