Few people even know about him?! He was in all the trailers! Sven specifically told us all we'd be able to recruit Jaheira and Minsc.
Easy to miss? You literally have to get to Act 3 and talk to Jaheira. That's it.

I didn't even know she had a house in town until recent playthroughs.
So... definitely a possible thing.
Minsc is hilarious, though. Such a wonderful, almost insane, moron.
Boo taught him this, so it has to be true.
He says something so idiotic, it barely makes any sense (usually doesn't), and then the whole gathered crowd cheers. Why? Because he's Minsc, that's why. He became the hero of Baldur's Gate by butt-kicking for goodness, not brilliant speeches.
Or as he sometimes yells: "More battle, less prattle!" I also like when he meta-complains about having to take turns before he can hit anybody. "Boo is sleeping, so die in silence, Evil!"
Viconia would have made a better companion, but Mommy Minthara is also grand!
The thing is, my experience with Monks is so skewed because you get him at L11 (even if you are under that level) and you probably have three acts of god tier monk loot sitting unused in your camp storage by then.
So while there is learning curve, there is very little 'working around the weaknesses of the class' at that point. I re-spec'd him into Monk, filled his inventory slots with sickening power and he just melts people with the punching.

But Haer'Dalis as a college of swords bard or a completely nutty call of letting you bring Volo into the actual 4 person party as a Lore bard would be ridiculously fun.
Haer'Dalis would basically be a Wyll upgrade plus added cheese / Shakespearean vibes
Volo could be SUCH a good character. He'd be coded to only give terrible advice based on his very faulty knowledge of things:
"Invite Cazador into our house, but you see, in this stratagem THE HOUSE IS MADE OF GARLIC ho ho!"
"[everyone paints themselves white as a sheet per his guidance] Elminster once assured me that Red Dragons are colorblind -- we're invisible to them now!"
"Fear not [striding forward] Owlbears are quite obviously vegetarians. Come, I've always wanted to see their plumage up close!"

I like the Bladesinger/Drunken Master combo because Bladesong AC bonus stacks with Unarmored Defense!
