Meh. It does not make much sense. E.g. a Wizard cannot even use a bow. But why would they use a bow to begin with. The standard race proficiencies are sufficient, as you get a handful of weapons to be good at if you need them. The rest is for specialised styles.
What weapon you choose is actually often less important than what buffs are on it (or what feats you have chosen).
Obviously, high dex characters tend to choose different weapons to high strength characters and class restrictions also limit what you choose.
Also, always carry a big crushing weapon if none of your characters has that as a main weapon (it doesn't have to be magical) for battering down unstable walls
Early in the game every party member should have a ranged weapon, so attacks are possible when you cannot close the distance to melee an enemy.
Its always a nice backup, and if you get silenced (Despite how extremely unlikely it is), at least you can still do ranged damage
It is, but a proficiency is still unnecessary for that extraordinaire rare case.
In particular in Baldur's Gate 3, all you need to do is to leave the area of effect of silence.
Why not axe? Hard choice, they both look cool, are the axe traits inferior or is the case that the best weapon you find is a great sword?
my 5, though, would be:
- staff. I think everyone can use it, but you find copy after copy with elemental damage and spells and other perks.
- 2h sword. These have great base damage (2d6) and you find good ones.
- long sword, lots of them in game
- hand crossbow. Just because bonus action attacks, eg cast a spell and fire twice with a bard/rogue3 archer/caster
-rapier: dex sneak attack weapon with solid damage.
----------------------
wizard etc should be able to use a light crossbow when silenced.
the 'cost' is the same for everyone. If you want weapons on your 'alternate' class that doesn't normally get them, and you can't get it from a racial pick, then the 'cost' is 1 level of fighter or fighter like all weapons class.
