Did you guys break Wyll's contract with Mizora?
I did - but what is the optimal choice?

Breaking it gives you a reward in achievement. And sacrificing an eternal soul of Wyll for his father's who already lived his life is irrational. And the game is wrong for trying to frame it as selfish.

It is selfish.

still in the middle of act 3, so i haven't seen the full consequences yet, but i'm playing as Wyll, and i have not broken the contract.

i have yet to feel or see any valid reason to want too. Other then that one Karlach incident, things seem to be pretty good.

You can find this out either from guides or just a playthrough but it comes down to this ...

Rule 1. Mizora lies. She tells Wyll either re-enter the contract, or his father dies. Or she sorta hints he may already be dead. But either way, she won't tell Wyll what's up unless he re-enters the contract.

So: just so you know, and I'm keeping this under spoiler tags, but you're here reading of your own volition. As I said, she's lying. You can keep his pact broken, and Duke Ravengard is most definitely still alive and being held in the Iron Throne. (In most game states, I guess I should say). When you go to rescue him, Mizora will make it harder to save him, because that's just who she is.

In short, knowing what I know now, I always have Wyll end his contract. Sure, he will lose his powers, but not before the end of the game.

Mizora won't tell you all of your character's options. The Narrator (who calls herself the DM in the outtakes but is listed as the Narrator in the credits) only outlines the pros and cons of what Mizora offers and not the other possibilities you can choose to do.

What I did:
In two words: Defy Mizora. In more words: Break the contract and save the Duke, too. You still get her and Wyll's powers through the end of the game. His powers end only when the Absolute is destroyed. This leads to a possible solution for Karlach and is shown to be a very positive resolution for both characters in the Epilogue.

Breaking it isn't a big deal, it's definitely the intended path

What "powers" is he losing? That seems like a big deal?!

Again, what "powers"? He seem to me the least powerful among my companions with no unique trick?

Damn. That makes every warlock in the world cry.

A warlock's powers are dependent on their patron. In the case of a Fiend, a contract with that patron. But Mizora helpfully, or unhelpfully, however you view it, points out Wyll's contract has a footnote that says it stays in effect 6 months after cancellation.

The bottom line is, once it ends (which is post-endgame), he's no longer a warlock. There are some post-game hints that he then shifts to becoming a ranger afterward, remaining the "Blade of ... " whatever, he just shifts to fighting skills.

Warlocks are known as "one-trick ponies". You build them to be reeeally good at something specific and, otherwise, rely on cantrips. This is not a playstyle some people can utilize effectively, but it can be effective.

Ah, okay; so nothing lost if I respec him ;)

Never give up your eternal soul.
GriffinPilgrim Jan 27, 2024 @ 7:03am
Yep. It's a judgement call but ultimately I felt it better to not give in to a devil and see if I could rescue his father without her help. And I could, so screw you Mizora!

During that 6 months, Wyll has to still obey Mizora.

Breaking the contract in Act III is different. The contract is completely destroyed, and Wyll is immediately released from all of Mizora's demands, but she is likewise not obligated to provide any powers two Wyll, either. She'll keep providing powers for the reason that she needs the Absolute destroyed per Zariel's demands, which is why his powers vanish once that battle's done if the contract was burned. It's Mizora's personal decision to provide continued powers to complete her imperative and not a binding contractual obligation with Wyll. This is explained at camp if the contract is burned.

EDIT: More Lore regarding Wyll: It was Zariel's demands that made Mizora recruit Wyll in the first place. Tiamat made a play for power in Avernus, currently ruled by Zariel. Wyll was at the wrong place at the wrong time and became a pawn in that event to stop Tiamat with no risk to Zariel. Tiamat was betting on that Zariel had no assets available to stop her. Zariel created one on-the-spot at a key moment in Tiamat's plan. This ties into official, published tabletop adventures regarding the Dragon Queen/Tiamat. This fills in a gap in how Tiamat was defeated. She was forced to improvise, and Devils are awful at improvisation. Demons, on the other hand, never plan anything. That's why the Blood War has never been resolved. Demons have a goal with no plan to achieve it. Devils oppose the goal that seems incomprehensibly random.
