Honor Mode and closing the game using Task Manager?
So I've been doing an Honor mode run when after probably the must unfair encounter IMO. I was on the run fleeing from the death shepherd's with my last living companion. Doing the old retreat revive do it again tactic. When my game froze up completely. I had to Task manager force close the game. Now whenever I start up it says the save is on Honor mode but I can still customize the difficulty. I started a new run to see if this was the case at the start and it is not. So my question is. Is my run ruined? Do I need to start over because circumstances screwed me or should I keep going. Because if its already over I don't want to bother putting in the 80+ hours to finish for literally nothing.

You can close the game via task manager and continue your HM run, actually.

Its an exploit you can do if your RAM allows it - just gotta close the game faster than it can sync.

Thank you. Its not something I wanted to do, its something I had no choice in doing. So I am assuming since the game still says its honor mode rules I will still get the achievement if I manage to win. Honestly at this point with 60+ hours on the save and still not even into act 3 I probably won't do it again if I don't get it because of this error.

I am not sure about either. You should not be able to customise the difficulty in Honour Mode. For reference:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3103820559
when closing the game incorrectly via task manager, which can happen easily, the game still will save. It needs to be a process kill to make sure the Honour Mode status is kept retained.

Well when starting a new Honor save it can't customize. But my original run still says its on Honor mode when I go to load it. I read in multiple places this is something that happens when using Task manager to cheat and doesn't prevent the achievement from unlocking.
I guess the only thing to do is to press on and finish the game. Hope and pray I still get the achievement since I technically never got a game over as I was alive just fleeing when the game froze up.

I also know for a fact I only used task manager to "End Task" I didn't do the kill process or any of that file editing the guide talks about. I have no idea how to do any of that myself as I never learned any of it. I'm sure using that I could figure it out but at this point its probably too little too late. So I'll just press on hope for the best and if it doesn't count I just likely won't bother with honor mode.

Yeah just beware of it - maybe try on a dummy file first.

If your PC is too slow, the game will catch you. Game needs to shut down in about 2-3 secs max.

The sources you refer to is wrong. You can cheat. But I will not tell you how. Plus, enough people make mistakes about that, so unless you know the details and understand the system you cannot cheat that easily.

My advice: do not play for an achievement. It will just soil a good gaming experience.

I just linked you a guide which shows how to do it correctly. "End Task" is not the way to do it. And that guide of my certainly has no file editing stuff in it.

That's pretty unfortunate. I think hardware/software failure are acceptable rationale for circumventing the soft limits imposed by honour mode. Be aware that, aside from the task manager task-kill that has been discussed above, you can backup save files by copying and pasting them from the save folder on your hard drive into another folder, and then replacing and overriding the save in the folder for the character doing an honour mode run.

Again, as I've said many times, I don't condone using this to decrease the challenge of honour mode or to get favorable rolls, etc., but for bugs and crashes, I personally think it's alright. Other people have also outlined methods using third-party programs that make automatic save-state backups to separate folders. I find the copy-and-paste method to be a good compromise as the hassle of doing so reduces the temptation to "save scum," and is low-tech, direct, easy, and is not recognized by the software as a subversion of the honour mode run, for the sake of the achievement.

As I said already if I dont get it for the run then I am simply not going to waste anymore time with the mode. I'm only doing it for the gold dice and achievement. If I put all these hours in for nothing I'll simply go back to playing the regular mode for fun. I can read that guide 50 times and I still likely won't grasp it, I dont have the knowhow to do these complicated file editing task ending methods and I simply will get far too frustrated trying to learn. Honor mode is garbage I cant stand it as is.

Honestly I'm not planning to cheat. If I can't do it legitimately then there is literally absolutely no reason what so ever to do it at all. But that said, in this case the game basically cheated me so if I get to the end of this run and I don't get the gold dice or the achievement then I'll just as I've said repeatedly completely abandon this otherwise garbage excuse of a difficulty mode and not touch it again because its not my fault the entire game froze up and I couldn't do anything.

Then keep on playing and fix it later old fashioned way when you encounter a solid issue in that regards. Do not forget to send in your savegame to Larian Support. Maybe they have a tip for you as well.

If the sources I found are all wrong as you say then theres no way to fix it. But we will find out in another 80 hours when I beat it this time around. I'll say honestly if my hours were wasted BG3 getting perm uninstalled unless Larian comes out with an expansion which is pretty much not going to happen.

Trust me: I am not refering to any sources but my own. I have seen so much crap which tells you to do this or that without explaining it. One of the reasons why I made my own guides.

And yeah, you can fix it later on, if it is just about achievement. Though I still keep thinking playing for an achievement is never worth it. Specifically Steam achievement.

If it says you're still playing on honor mode when you check difficulty in game, you'll get your achieve. Another ez way to check is to see if it says honor mode on the actual save file, too - it won't let you have multiple saves if you're still on HM.

I hear you, Marakath, Angel, and OddJob. The overarching issue of reporting bugs and software failures to Larian is certainly the best way to go in terms of helping them improve the game, which has obviously been both a labor of love and, fortunately, a huge payday for them. In the short term, though, dealing with glitches, bugs, and crashes, I think that it's okay to backup and replace your honor mode save files. Personally, I don't care about the achievement, as I'm not a completionist, but I like the challenge of the high difficulty and the simplicity of the single file.
