if its the same platform, whoever is lowest needs to update. You can probably force this somehow, no matter what steam thinks.
Mac update is delayed. Should be here soon though.
Despite the additional delays it is currently causing on patch#6, patch#6 is still in pre-release phase. You should be able to see it soon.
Keep in mind: it is easier for Windows users to match their version with the Mac version than the other way around.

and it does not prevent them from using the latest version - but gives an option to play with players who have a lower version. That is why it works so great as workaround.
Remember: the patch#6 is currently in pre-release state. It would probably have been released yesterday if Mac did not need more testing. Now I am expecting it today, as Thursday is a typical release day, unlike the last hotfix which came out on a Wednesday.
