Finally completed the evil Durge
Honestly? It didn't feel that rewarding seeing all my allies forcefully put under my control. I know it was the roleplay plan as my paladin intended to manipulate them all. Who doesn't want a vampire lord as a thrall? Or the leader of Sharrans as a thrall either?

But eugh, didn't feel right seein my homie Astarion be so emotionless. Same with Shart. And Minthara was kinda heartbreaking
"You're beautiful my love" she says, right before I forcefully dominate her. She survived the initial Absolute cult, we went through thick and thin and she was redeeming herself (kinda) and then my Durge ♥♥♥♥♥ her over

Well, at least its over! It was kind of interesting seeing the Durge story go through like that. And I wish we had more of that creepy imp dude with a top hat or whatever he is. Also the lack of an epilogue akin to other endings is kinda sad, but oh well. At least my Paladin is now laying waste to Faerun

The options for playing evil just arent as fleshed out as they could be. You are basically stuck playing this Bhaalspawn-type toxic jerk, but what's missing is a more structured, truly evil path, like something you'd see with Bane. Imagine being able to create and control companies, dominate the scene, maybe even build up a Church of Bane in Baldur's Gate. You would do it all through sly deception, manipulation, and strategically dealing with the do-gooders and rivals; now that would add some real depth to the evil playthrough experience.

Tbh that's what I basically roleplayed. In act 1 I discovered the tadpoles allowed for some command of those tadpoled. In act 2 I discovered the elder brain controls them, and it can be controlled like a puppet. In act 3 I ascended Astarion and make Shart leader of the Sharrans. This was with the intent to have the most efficient "guards" or such. And Minthara came for the ride, we got attached, but she was but a pawn

I think it just feels hollow due to my overall attachment to the companions

Dominating the brain is fulfilling the Chosen's plan, including Gortash. Why bother with subterfuge if you can enslave the entire city and kill the few who can even resist. It's the same evil plan that Gortash details in books you can find around Banite areas, and his parents house.

Aww.. But yeah, none of the companions in the game really grabbed me, tbf. They just don't have the depth that characters in games like Planescape: Torment or DA:O had.

Take Astarion, for instance, his 'darlings' and 'sweethearts' just rub me the wrong way every time. Shadowheart, shes got a lot written into her, granted, but she ends up feeling like a 40 year old emo girl whos a bit lost. Halsin, Minsc, Jaheira, they are just so forgettable.

Now, Gale from Waterdeep couldve been interesting if he actually managed to overthrow Mystra the lame goddess who had her powers granted not earned, and take control of the Weave. That would be a story, hehe! Laezel's not too bad; shes got this solid, loyal vibe that's kinda cool to me, despite not being easy on the eyes to say the least.

And Minthara, havet really played her path yet, but I am hoping she's a true, cunning Lolth drow, not just another "I can fix her" cliché.

Nah.. Evil Durging is just hollow. They made it that way on purpose. You're just a serial killer, with some manipulation... that leads to really nothing.. and then your colorful marvel villain boring ending. All the beauty of the game, here's your throne. Though Astarion on the throne is pretty hot, ngl. But eh... you got all they wanted to really give. Its part of the big reason I'm just kinda miffed with the game. You either play goody-good, somewhat good or ridiculous serial killer.

WHAT I EXPECTED.. *clears throat*, was seeing the villains side more closely, manipulating the actual baddies more and deviating plans a bit. You see nothing new, so nothing really sticks out. Oh you can go all Orin-Mode insane after being Bhaals favorite murder hobo, but eh? At least you got more companions and more story bits in the previous installments, this was just.. "we slapped an 'evil' run in so people wouldn't complain anymore that there was no evil run" and when players kinda complained how lackluster it was the literal response from Sven is "Its supposed to be empty. You're supposed to be alone. You're not supposed to have anything as evil." And i'm like.. homie.. thats not how that works. You could just say the truth that you didn't want to do it and slapped it in last minute as another way to play good, but dark. :P Thats all its meant to be.

Empty and Hollow nails a good chunk of the end game story really, evil durging just shows it more.

Thats exactly what Larian needs to pick up on: crafting a better evil narrative.

Maybe they should tone down the lighthearted approach for a bit. Or, you know, bring in a Slav writer, they're known for not holding back and not needing to. We got no chill, common knowledge.

Sounds like you had a great playthrough.

This is why I would rather not be a Durge and just do it as a custom character.
Apparently, being a CC has better options at the end if one wants to go the route you are.

I'll never do Durge.
Just don't have that type of mentality to choose and do those types of things.
No biggie though. Glad you were able to get through it.

Yeah but that kick ass murder raptor form is hard to pass on.
Dr.Abscondus Jan 25, 2024 @ 1:13am
Don't blame the Durge for your choices. You are not forced to be evil. That is the whole point of the Durge character. Can you overcome your evil origins as a Bhaalspawn? If you can't then it's all on you. The player character in Baldur's Gate 1 was also a Bhaalspawn and faced a similar struggle. That's why playing BG3 as the Durge is the true way the game was intended to be played.

I get the sense that the dark urge is really meant to be played in that 'I can fix it' mode, mainly for those looking to follow a redemption path in the game.

I'm considering an evil run as well, but I still haven't decided if I want to play as Dark Urge or Tav. I already did redeeming/resisting Dark Urge and I enjoyed it, so I recommend that option for most people.

If you're going to do it, you may as well go Durge.

Cartoonish evil is not evil. It just a poor parody. Like teaching kids that bad guys are bold hunchbacks in long coats while in reality their friendly 2m tall blonde catholic priest with a shining smile is more likely to rape them.
