"stealing"
devs need to rethink what is actually considered stealing. I don't care if it has a red hand symbol over it. A potion on the ground; not in a crate by the broken bridge in the ruins of a Duegar camp is NOT anyone's property. Makes me want to just go full evil and massacre everyone in every town I encounter just so I can pocket some junk on the roadside and not be bothered by NPC's with literally nothing better to do then to protect vendor trash

Thats really really true, i noticed that as well, sometimes so random items say its "stealing" dont leave it abandoned then

Leave your wallet on the ground and see how you react when someone else picks it up.

Not sure that's that great of an analogy.

More like, if you have an encampment going on in the area, obviously stuff gets laid around, but not necessarily abandon.
But it grinds my gears too some of the items... Sometimes you can loot a crate right next to the vendor NPC, and then you find a tossed pair of boots far from anyone, and it's red

All these games have too much stuff just available for the taking. Probably more things should be "stealing", not fewer things. That's part of why you almost certainly end up with 30-60K of gold just weighing you down by the end of the game.

Yes there seems to be no real rhyme or reason why some things can be looted and some cant. Just killed the animated armors in the forge...looted 3 of them but the 4th was red...no one is around but how is that stealing...

Yeah but there needs to be consistency and not break immersion.

I do agree that loot shouldn't be so freely available.

If there's no witness there's no crime. Loot away bro.
wanna know how to loot every red item laying around?
>cast a darkness cloud
>go into TB mode.
>loot everything without time limits
>send all the evidence to camp or to companion
>plausible deniability when people question vanishing items
>profit

(on a side note, Darkness should really have been flagged as hostile spell, they might eventually change that like they changed some others)

My rule of thumb:

Are NO npcs around?: IZ MINE! MINE MINE MINE! DUN CARE IF STEEALING! MINE! I go absolute fox-gremlin all over the items. My companions must hold every stupid piece of garbage I find before I go sell said garbage to apparently rich garbage-men... er traders.

Are Npcs around?: Wut mate? Wasn't doin' nothin'. Just checkin' the lights out. Make sure everyone eyes be good and stuff..... *side eyes everyone* WHAAAT?! I didn't pee on the items this time!

Nah seriously. If there are NO npcs around and it says 'stealing' then just get it. I've had zero issues.

I will agree that stealing feels kinda.. meh.. and sweet talking my way out of the guards is pretty easy. I also find the economy to be too lopsided. You're either too poor because you don't pick up every bit of garbage equipment to sell.. or you're too rich from pickpocketing vendors instead of buying items.. But that also usually entails save scumming. If you do that without it and set your rules- kudos! Also shouldn't care how much you have in the end, since its more 'well earned' in that sense.

At the moment though, its really funny to think of them simply ignoring this giant cloud of smoke. Like yeah, just a tuesday
