It's sensitive to the movement. You have to immediately let go of the stick when choosing the song or the character will move slightly, ending the song immediately.
There was one mention where mods caused the savegame to corrupt that they become unusable.
Nonetheless a mod is a mod. The other mention was about a cosmetic only mod. It surprised them, but after they removed their mods thoroughly as instructed and tried it again it worked for them.
I also noticed that all of the npcs are also unable to play. The same glitch happens.
If you're not proficient with an instrument it will just sound horrible, it doesn't actually prevent you from playing anything. Something else is going on here if the OP can't play at all.
