Shadow curse sucks and ultimately it's just down to where you figure out to get your first moonlantern, and then whether you decide to keep using it OR free the pixie inside it, so now you don't have to keep it equipped . Torches, light spells, daylight spell, and Isobel's blessing can hold the lesser version of the curse back, but you need a moonlantern for the worst areas of the curse.
On the other, it's the only place where things like "shadow teleport," requiring you to teleport from/to shadowed areas, constantly work. Outdoors anyway, as indoor places (that are not abandoned) are often lit.
What I find wierd is that there's a part 1 of a document in the Underdark zone with a special secondary document needed for it (or a special someone or similar), part 2 in the Mountain Pass zone which also needs that special secondary document (or that special someone or similar), and part 3 in the Shadow-Cursed Lands which also needs that special secondary document (or a special someone or similar).
While none of the documents are actually necessary for the sidequest, they do have an effect on the special someone and have objectives in the quest including an update for getting all three.
It suggests the game wants you complete both paths before deciding on how to enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands if you're doing it for the lore (or for that special someone). Without that special someone or similar and without the secondary document from the Underdark, parts 2 and 3 are unreadable.
