Unless it's Valour Bard, then it's bad.
He wants to Bard, obviously.
Swords Bard is pretty wicked too.

I turn Shart into a Lore Bard-8/Illusionist-2/Cleric-2 (Trickery until she rejects Shar, then respec to Light).
The thing with this build is slashing flourish (ranged.) It just allows you to pick 2 targets per attack (that can be the same target twice) at the cost of 1 bardic inspiration per use, but they come back on a short rest, as well as action surge, and you get 3 short rests being a bard. Early-game it will be a struggle at times to hit until you get to some of the better gear, but when you do hit, only paladins and the raging thrower barbarian will be able to keep up with your damage. Stacking to-hit, with ranged attacks or in general, is recommended and mostly necessary. Elixirs of Heroism will be your best friend. There's a ring you can buy in Moonrise, if you go in early by convincing the guards you're friendly, that gives advantage on all attack rolls but disadvantage on saves that is essentially the lynchpin of this character going forward. You'll just melt everything.
As an added bonus, you'll have up to third-level spell slots and not much to do with them in combat, since you'd rather be shooting most of the time, so you can be a walking heal battery. Additionally, you'll also have a good amount of useful skills, with access to the gloves of thievery as well that you can swap on for disarming traps and picking locks or pockets; while ALSO having good CHA so you can do the talking for the party as well. Only dedicated CHA-casters will get higher discounts from vendors than you will as well if you take expertise in persuasion.
As for companions, Karlach with tavern brawler and the berserker subclass (throwing things) is excellent, and you can't go wrong with Gale's AOE evocation spells for big groups. Your 4th is up in the air. I used Shart for most of the game as a tempest cleric, but she was easily the weakest link. Basically this slot can be whomever you're doing story things for at the time, at pretty much any point in the game excepting maybe early early where you may need more healing. You could even pick up a hireling from Withers or make one of the companions into a Sorc or Paladin for the 4th slot to really beef the power level up.
*disclaimer* this isn't my build, and if you want more I recommend looking up D&D Deep Dive on youtube. He's done a bunch of BG3 character builds, including this one, and is worth watching for ideas.
