How did you get there in the first place without understanding how the shadow curse works?
There are 2 'levels' of the shadow curse. One where a torch is enough to protect you (outside of town) and one where you need special protection.
What might be happening is that you aren't using the special protection. Olivers portal transports you to the townsquare, where the shadows are strongest.
Ah, I see. Well, in that case: Run, Forrest, run
You have 3 options:
Run to Moon Rise there is a lantern upstairs
Kill and loot the spider Drider
or
Run to Isobel
If you have defeated Oliver, your party will start taking loads of damage from the shadow curse. To avoid this it is important to enter turn-based-mode.
If you don’t have one of those Moonlanterns/it’s still broken, there is only one realistic way to get out of this situation; running to Moon Rise. To do that, you must run into the direction where Oliver was with his little shield during the fight (the fountain looking thing). If you look behind the fountain, you can see that at the end of a path, the shadow curse ends. Run there.
As stated before, it is crucial to stay in turn based mode, using dash and misty step to get to the Moon Rise. Remember, it is also important to heal. There is also a waypoint next to Moon Rise. When you get there you will be able to fast travel again.
SPOILER
Now if you want to go back into that area with the strong shadow curse, you need a working moonlantern. If you don’t have one, you can get one by entering Moon Rise, playing your cards right, so that the other true souls trust you (enough) and you get a mission by Z’rell to obtain an artifact Balthazar was supposed to find. She’ll give you a key to his chambers, where you can find a moonlantern.
