BALDUR 'S GATE 2: Shadows of Amn'
I still have the original big box version of Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. To this day it is still fantastic. You cannot beat big box PC games -for those of us of a certain age.

The box was great, I agree, full of goodies as well.

It is Baldur's not Baulder's tho.

I miss the cardbox smell of those good old game boxes.

Yeah, digital downloads are not quite the same. Plus I hate, you don't own the game technically.

I could reinstall my Beamdog android version of Bg2 a few years ago on my new tablet because of licences issues with Google...

Ugh. That sucks.

I am not so sure about owning the game, more or less. I remember back then the licenses were similar to nowadays. With the phrasing you are allowed to use them etc. etc. Via GOG.com you can at least keep all of the games as backup on your personal storage. While on Steam it is a rarity but also exists (like Baldur's Gate 3).

That's also why I bought Bg 3 it from GoG. I have all the original files on 2 portable SSD drives. So I'll always have copy offline if something happens. I'm debating if I should get a extra Xbox version (maybe in a few years when prices are very low)

It's probably good to add that getting Enhanced Editions of BG1 and 2 through GOG also gives you access to original versions of both games and I assume that's not a thing on Steam.

Yes, this is why I switched back to buying CDs a few years ago, they are often cheaper than the digital version - I'll buy a bundle of them at $8 a pop. Rip them into FLAC and they are yours forever.
We don't have as many choices with games nowadays unfortunately.

Yeah, thats the issue as well, you don't have the choice. If you want a physical copy you either have to wait, or buy the collection's edition or get the console version.

I have a whole corner of our gaming room dedicated to "old" games, limited editions, collectors editions and such stuff and my box of BG1 and BG2 are there, too :)

Old games are still amazing... thank god for gog that hosts games that steam doesn't have.
seeker1 Jan 4, 2024 @ 5:17am
Games in boxes, that actually contained printed manuals. With physical discs inside. Eh, I remember those days.

I wish there were DRM free versions of Square Enix games. Chrono Trigger would be on top of my wishlist while I am willing to buy all Final Fantas games, up to IX again and later on only XIV.

I do not remember any good manuals with many screenshots printed on black and white. I am grateful with game design changed to in-game tutorials instead.

Even nowadays I am havin lots of issues with games like Destroyer U Boat Hunter If it does not come with a good tutorial.

Damn still remember emulating Chrono Trigger on the ZSNES emulator many years after it's release... didn't know what to expect... was blown away how amazing that game was like 10 years after it's release. xD

Glad the older FF games are available now... FF6 is my favorite... they just need a FFT remaster...
