Bg1 and Bg2 stories, how good are they?
Just wondering how good are stories of first 2 games. I beat bg3 twice and I love the game, but story is mediocre imo. How would you compare stories from first two games to this game, or games like dragon age origins?

That is to say, it relied on the plot to carry the characters, not the characters to carry the plot as is popular in modern media. Which is mostly used as an excuse for the plot to be garbage, but be allegedly elevated by all the quirky characters and their relationships and all that nonsense. Too bad most modern characters have the depth and the qualities of an average twitter drama queen.
+1
Just compare Jaheira's arc in BG1 and BG2 and see how she is in BG3...
Jaheira had no arc in BG1. She was there to follow Bhaalspawn unless they were extra evil and occasionally produce a random voice line.

Are people forgetting that companions in BG1 had almost no personality or dialogues outside of recruiting them and sometimes doing one short quest?

In 1999 it was feeling like she have a rich personality comparing to the games that existed at this time :-).

People on this thread are on some serious nostalgia trip when it comes to BG1 story and characters.

Not really. JRPGs were already leaning heavily on that for years. FF7 is basically the reason why BG2 characters even have a personality and story arc to speak off. It got so popular that even Western devs were forced to take notice

There's even an interview with an original Bioware dev who confirms that.

Yea, I was afraid my own perspective might be a little too rose tinted, but after reading some of these other responses I feel a lot better about myself :D

If you want to romance Jaheira ... a younger Jaheira... the Bhaalspawn can in BG2, though there were aspects about it that made it awkward.

There's nothing much to the BG1 characters, including the BG1 ones they reused for BG2, which includes her. She becomes a PERSON in BG2. As does Minsc.

Bear in mind the "romances" in that game basically devolve down to text and occasionally voiced reactions from their glowing portrait. But that said, they definitely involved long, complex stories in their progression. You might have to duel your bard over Aerie as a love triangle develops. Romancing Viconia can get her to change her alignment. Bodhi & the vampires will kidnap your beloved. Etc.

Of course, there were romance mods, and the Imoen Romance was ... icky.

Better than this game could ever be.

BG1 and BG2 are epic, even more so with their expacs. I was disapointed how short BG3 is and how linear.
What? BG1 is considerably shorter than 3 even with expansion. BG2 should be pretty close in lenght to 3, especailly with Throne of Bhaal.

Shadows of Amn was the base game my dude.
I played both recently bg1 can be compacted slot if you don't explore and just follow the mainquest so it might me be as short as bg3

But saying bg2 is shorter than 3 is just ludicrous. Especially when slot of bg3 hours are watching cutscenes in bg2 you are actually playing the game

Reading text and watching cutscenes are interchangeable for these games and BG2 has a lot of reading.

Perhaps it feels that way, but BG3 is longer than BG 1-2. I've played not so long ago, I've made 3 runs in BG1 and 3 more in BG2 (including Legacy of Bhaal difficulty) and it was 150 hours in BG1 and 175 hours in BG2 (for 3 runs in each, not one run, you can check in my profile). So BG3 is clearly longer, over 150 hours for one run.
