Are people forgetting that companions in BG1 had almost no personality or dialogues outside of recruiting them and sometimes doing one short quest?
People on this thread are on some serious nostalgia trip when it comes to BG1 story and characters.
Not really. JRPGs were already leaning heavily on that for years. FF7 is basically the reason why BG2 characters even have a personality and story arc to speak off. It got so popular that even Western devs were forced to take notice
There's even an interview with an original Bioware dev who confirms that.
Yea, I was afraid my own perspective might be a little too rose tinted, but after reading some of these other responses I feel a lot better about myself :D
There's nothing much to the BG1 characters, including the BG1 ones they reused for BG2, which includes her. She becomes a PERSON in BG2. As does Minsc.
Bear in mind the "romances" in that game basically devolve down to text and occasionally voiced reactions from their glowing portrait. But that said, they definitely involved long, complex stories in their progression. You might have to duel your bard over Aerie as a love triangle develops. Romancing Viconia can get her to change her alignment. Bodhi & the vampires will kidnap your beloved. Etc.
Of course, there were romance mods, and the Imoen Romance was ... icky.
God's that exists!? *Spoiler* she's your sister!
I think I threw up in my mouth a little.
Better than this game could ever be.
But saying bg2 is shorter than 3 is just ludicrous. Especially when slot of bg3 hours are watching cutscenes in bg2 you are actually playing the game
Reading text and watching cutscenes are interchangeable for these games and BG2 has a lot of reading.
