Orc Rogue it is. (Facetious. Not that it might not be workable and fun).
Edit: actually it's not half bad looking.
Not getting killed, extra damage on crits.
There are worse races.
Don’t know how 5e behave, but in D&D story of existence, sneak attack (or the old backstab) never summed up with critical, it’s either one or the other.
Yeah Half-Orc is actually just good with any frontlining classes. It's probably one of the best overall.
My vote would be for that or Halfling.
5E crits doubles the number of damage dice that result directly from the hit w/o additional saves.
Weapon damage dice, sneak attack dice, divine smite dice -- these double.
Flat damage does not (so no +20 damage from GWM/Sharpshooter for instance; a disarmed storm giant who got a critical hit with an unarmed punch still only does 1+STR modifier), nor does damage gated behind a second roll (like poison from a failed CON save wouldn'troll twice the poison damage dice).
Am literally playing an orc rogue in one friends game, and a dragonkin rogue in another. They are awesome. :) (And it's hilarious.)
Playing drow rogues are my favourite, though. Particularly if you're wanting sneakity stabbity lockpicky murdery type of play. :)
