Githyanki patrol fight in act 1 is the most unfair and difficult fight in the entire game.
Ive beaten the game, and not even the final boss fight was as difficult as this. You are put up against a squadron of 4 level 5 Gith, each of which are wildly overtuned for this early on. Im using potions, going in with full consumables, throwables, highground, etc...

  • The captain of the squad Baretha is capable of doing 5 attacks in a single turn.
  • All enemies can hit for half of your HP in a single attack if you are the same level as them.
  • Because they are all Gith all of them have access to misty step (Teleport spell) which can quickly get rid of any high ground advantage you have already set up.
  • They always have a higher initiative than you.
  • They will cast hold person and effectively remove a member of your team from the fight.
  • They win all concentration saving throws, and never lose the roll against you trying to cast hold person on them

Well, if you CHOSE to fight an Elite Githyanki strike team led by Voss?

Heh. Don't know what else to expect but a VERY tough fight.

That fight is tough, but at the same time fairly easy to avoid by talking your way out of it. I did it once and even on normal difficulty it was rough, but doable. But I do agree it is a tad unfair compared to our capabilities at that point.

I always save this battle after doing everything I possibly can do before proceeding to the Mountain Pass, including the Underdark (without taking the elevator to Act 2). Good time to use up those haste potions, smokepowder bombs, etc.

You can talk your way out of it, or rather its there as a barrier before the creche. If it was not there you could essentially do what, one fight between the start of the game and getting a legendary weapon?

My guess is its their solution to that, its a roadblock on purpose, its one of the hardest act 1 fights because its there to stop you progressing.

Whats interesting about it is just that you can get a legendary weapon from that fight if you can beat the fight and use an invis potion.... Not sure why they let us do that.

No no...the Shar fight is the most difficult and unbalanced. Until I learned how the blind mechanic worked I almost rage quit. Death to the cult of Shar.

It isnt much of a choice when 3 of the 4 dialogue options with Lae'Zel lead to you going into combat, the only option that has you avoid combat requires both a perception AND deception check, which if failed you go into combat anyway.

This is the path to the creche, where Lae'Zel has been complaining for you to go this whole time, and when you go there and let her do her thing, it ends horribly.

In my opinion this is poor design, they shouldnt be pushing you in the narrative direction to go to the creche, then block it by this death squad because theres some uber legendary weapon up the path that the devs put there intentionally. If anything you should be led there naturally, with a difficulty curve and then have a fight that is rewarding you with the legendary (Like Ansur in Act 3 to get the greatsword and helmet).

Odd. My conversation with Voss was short and successful. Did not even have Lae'zel in the party. Of course, I do have a 'party face' character to lead and I am not sure what the whole 'Perception' and 'Deception' thing you mention was about. Cannot really remember what I had for a check, but it was not one of those. And it was only a single check.

In any case, I have never had to fight that patrol and it was never an issue. If you had Lae'zel along, you did let her do that talking?

Baretha is the strongest one, focus taking her out first, rest fall easily.
Popsicles Jan 2, 2024 @ 3:08pm
Do the whole underdark first. You can fight them at level 6. They are beatable at 5th level, but it's a much easier fight with a party at level 6.

Yes the persuasion and deception check was if you let Lae'Zel do the talking. You let her talk, then it gives 4 options, one of which is you persuading her to "Go along with him" and then afterwards she has to do a deception check.

If you have Lae'zel, and let her do the talking, she has to pass a deception check. Letting her do what she thinks is right will lead to a fight. If you don't have a character with good social skills leading the conversation, it's hard to avoid the fight, as most dialogue paths lead to combat or require multiple dice rolls to avoid it.

Maybe I just got lucky on my choices and rolls. The first play through, Lae'zel was in the party and went off with them. Don't remember what I had to roll for that.

This second play through, Lae'zel was not in the party and I am pretty sure I just had to roll an easy Persuasion check for Voss not to stab us. :)

I do not think I used Inspiration in either case.
Rabidnid Jan 2, 2024 @ 3:41pm
Do it at level 5 or 6 and it is not impossible.
Recjawjind Jan 2, 2024 @ 3:44pm
Eh the githyanki are fine to do at ~4. If you wanna make absolutely sure you can ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ them, do it at 5.
