How does the brain puzzle work?

everything i see on here is talking about the goal or the objective or a good strategy to doing it but- i cant even start doing it because the only thing i can do when the puzzle turns on is toggle on or off the first four buttons. Idk if its cuz im playing on controller but it feels like people were talking about making a path like you physically had to move your mouse or something and all i can do is make the first four nodes light up in different combinations. nothing i seem to do progresses them down the line or changes which ones light up, (pressing reason then emotion does the same as if i did another one first) i dont know if theres some ui i should be getting with instructions for this thing but its such a frustrating experience to have this puzzle in front of you understand what you need to do and not have any options to actually do the thing

rotating the camera in the live action mode does do anything on controller, its only when you can do the free camera in turn based mode where youre actually able to do it

i had to switch to keyboard and mouse for it because of how poorly optimized it was for controller
