Report a translation problem
A big loophole in the oaths is that only what you say/do matters. To an extent it makes sense; you wouldn't want to have a morally dubious party member breaking your oath by swindling someone, for example. But it gets a little weird when you're hanging out with someone doing truly evil stuff and it has no effect on your oath.
I don’t know 5e very well, maybe this is the new face or paladins.
YES companion characters can break their oath if they take an action under your direct input that would result in a breach of oath.
Example, Today in fact
Had a reclassed companion character break apart a petrified drow, figured well she had a warhammer afterall.
Laezil even said something about feeling different.
Then oathbreaker pally shows up in camp.
Honor Mode, could not just reload so I caughed up the gold and paid the penance price to return her to normal pally standing.
But dang, it was a petrified drow....Was already pretty much dead anyway.
