It is not broken, if it was, it'd say so. It specifically says that it causes auto-crits for anyone attacking from melee. Das why it's so broken.

Not quite correct. The creature being held gets to make a save at the end of their turns, it stops on save.

Yeah the end of the victim's turn they get another chance to make a save, or until the duration is up or concentration broken

Hold person is one of the best spells, it was doing a lot of heavy lifting through the early game for me. Gith patrol + creche especially.

You can ignore the word "concentration" as 1 of the wizard subclass btw.
