Yeah, the Danse spell doesn't seem worth it. It summons four ghouls, they don't seem much different from ones that you get from Animate Dead, but they are not under your control - as you found.
That said, I have never had them turn on and attack me. It's just that they will attack enemies - they are "green allied" - but you have no control over them. They are totally run by the game's AI which, frankly, sucks. (Hmmm, maybe they got you "wiped" by aggro'ing the wrong stuff -- ? -- yeah, that's annoying too.)
Of the other 3 spells you can get at Sorcerous Sundries, Dethrone and Artistry of War are good. I guess so good you need to LR after casting them, even if you still have Lvl 5 spell slots. I really get that with AoW as admittedly it's OP as crap. Dethrone is not THAT great as compared to Disintegrate etc. And the Summon Seelie spell? Shrug. It summons a deva, but if you get Planar Ally, you can summon a deva, OR a cambion or djinni. (Yes, I know it's not on the normal wizard spell list, but ... )
Out of all of them, Artistry of War is the one you want most, I think. It's magic missiles' really big, really nasty big brother.
I used them for the first time while I was in the iron throne prison and didn't know that they were uncontrollable. When I had saved everyone and we all got back on the ship, the stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ piece of ♥♥♥♥ ghouls got onto the submarine and then blew the ♥♥♥♥ up and killed my entire party and every single person I saved AS WELL as the driver of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ submarine.
Absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rage inducing.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.. but how did they blow up, still a hell of a story. xD
Also a nice headups lol.
I was going to face minsc where you have to go through the narrow tunnel... but because they were summoned by my mainchar they blocked the way for the rest of my party whom were behind... couldn't even fly over... and the ghouls wouldn't move lol... that made things 100x more annoying than it should have been.
It's made worse by the fact I completed basically every side quest, main quest and personal quest and only had gortash and the brain left once I completed the iron throne .
I had to take a break for a few days before starting another durge honor run.
When the ghouls die they have a 'death burst' which does aoe damage, for whatever reason the 'long rest' timer on their lives ran out as everyone got on the ship... they climbed up the ladder and I guess the move to the cutscene is counted as a 'rest' because they just exploded as the cutscene started and then everyone turned into mince meat and I got a game over. I don't know if it was a bug or if that's how it was meant to be, but the lack of control is seriously a problem, especially since I just wanted them to body block the ladder from the stupid fish and DEFINITELY NOT FOLLOW ME INTO AN ENCLOSED SUB ><
Damn I just got the book for the first time so I didn't know they did that! But yeah it sucks doesn't sound like that's intended... I guess I will just save them for boss fights or something lol. Still you got a cool story to tell.. >.>
Anyhoo ... unsurprisingly, there's a mod to restore the spell to working the way it did in EA at Nexus.
P.S. just get Animate Dead ++ mod if you want to engage in necromancy, and it actually being useful and practical.
