Careful spell metamagic I believe is protective from more forms of sorceror magic, but doesn't cancel all damage.
All in all, I'm surprised there's no option in Explorer Mode or Custom Difficulty to disable friendly fire altogether. Other games have it. That includes hitting your allies with splash damage from grenades and projectiles.
In turn based, you usually can avoid hitting your party members and allies with careful targeting. But I find the game is sometimes a very crappy "line judge". I'm pretty sure allies are outside of the cone/line/zone (sure looks that way to my eyes), but then it says I hit them anyway.
