Harper Geraldus Appreciation Post
He's the one in Act 3 who helps in the fight at Danthelon's when you meet up with the Harpers. He's the most helpful NPC ally I've had yet. (Second place goes to the oxen or whatever they were in Grymforge.) Usually they range from "basically useless" to "actively making things worse for my team," but this guy was single-handedly taking down enemies in one turn without causing any problems for my people. I want him as my ally in every fight.

I love this man. He's beautiful and perfect and actually, genuinely good at being a Harper.

I always tell Jaheira that she can't make his decisions for him. My man got blackmailed into betraying Jaheira and despite knowing consequences could be dire, he stood his ground and warned us.

I wonder what she would say. I didn't undermine Jaheira's authority at the time and she confessed she might have spared his life this way. Make of that what you will. Jaheira generally knows what to do and why she does it.

Next time I'll try your option and see what she says.

Spoiler: You get massive approval from her and she agrees, but tells Geraldus to lay low because there's no telling how many harpers have been replaced by doppelgangers.

And yes, I usually trust Jaheira's judgement as well. I semi-ironically call her mom and I was thrilled when I found out that you can join the harpers, if you're not the Dark Urge and didn't go to Avernus with Karlach at the endgame party. (Spoiler for the epilogue, unrelated to the Geraldus-Spoiler.)

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. She didn't share that specific piece of information - but it was, obviously, heavily implied that the Harpers were that compromised, she felt uncertain about its future. And therefore spared him of an ill-fate. I wonder why she couldn't be honest about it to him?

If I had to guess, it's partially that she thought it would sting less for him if he thought that the reason he got kicked out was the consequences of him endangering civilians, rather than Jaheira wanting to keep him safe.
The other part is the fact that Jaheira most definitely struggles at showing concern for others when speaking to them face to face. Sternness is fine, like when she tells Rion that she was meant to get the little ones out of the city, as if Jaheira wasn't just as concerned for her older children. But concern implies vulnerability and you can tell how much she struggles with that when she argues with Minsc after rescuing him. Her tearfilled "And worse than perhaps any of that: You forced me to leave you behind." always hits me right in the feels.

That's a compelling argument. It makes me want to go back a bit and play the first 2 installments of BG. She's been through it.

My partner just got me to start BG2 with them, because personally, they weren't the biggest fan of 1. Gotta say, I like the system so far.

Oh, for sure. I'm dreading the moment when we find Khalid, though. We just got started, so we're still at the very bottom of the starting dungeon, but I know it's coming and I already like Jaheira's younger self.
Though provoking Minsc into breaking himself out also was good fun.
