Won't work on Linux Computer
I am able to play this game fine of windows back home, But am unable to launch the game on my Linux laptop. At first the game would launch and load to title screen before crashing. I have since re-installed, changed Proton versions, Deleted cache, among other things. Now I launch from steam and the play button turns blue for a few seconds then back to green as if it never launched. If i go into the files and run the dx11 .exe file i get an assertion failed message with "Expression: "compare_hlsl_types(arg1->data_type,arg2->data_type)"

That is not a BG3 game problem.

That is an issue with trying to run the game on an unsupported OS. You would need to post your issue on the forums of the specific Linux version / Proton version that you are trying to use.

Good Luck

This was happening to me on the steam deck (which uses Linux) with the latest update.

I fixed it by running protonup and downloading and installing the latest version (I think it was 8.3.x), and then ran bg3 in compatibility mode using that latest proton version. That's ultimately what worked for me

Where do i get protonup?

It is working here just fine (Debian Sid) with 'Proton Hotfix' selected as compatibility (don't remember when I set it to that, but just tested it with the DirectX 11 renderer).

Maybe give us some more details on your set up (hardware / distribution) and we can help out getting it to launch?

I did have an odd occurrence where it said the server was offline... tried a second time to load the game and it was fine.

I use Linux mint, and my specs are;
12th gen intel i7-1260p with integrated grapgics (Intel Alder Lake-p)
with roughly 16gb RAM

I am aware that I wouldn't be able to run the game well, but i should be able to run it.

Just open the discover store. Type protonup in the search (it'll probably already be installed). Launch it, from there you can install later versions

Should I install the ProtonGB from protonup?

I got past the launch, Now it loads into the title screen and crashes. I am going to tinker with it a bit more. Do you have any advice?

It runs well on Linux, generally. It's also "Gold" rated on protondb.com and rated "Verified" by Steam. https://www.protondb.com/app/1086940 might contain helpful comments as well.
I use the commandline "%command% --skip-launcher" to skip the launcher. This might help, if the problem is with the launcher and not the game directly.
I run it on regular Proton 8.x on Arch Linux, vanilla kernel and mesa, amdgpu + mesa radv, 7900xtx.
Sometimes, restarting Steam might also help. Use "PROTON_LOG=1" before the commandline to generate a log file in $HOME. Maybe it contains additional info for troubleshooting.
But generally this game runs well on Linux. I only had 1 crash within >300 hours and that was probably game bug related.

Hmm, it might be that you are just using Intel graphics. I'll see if I have enough disk space on one of my laptops to see if it will load there.

If he is running Mint, he won't have the discover store (which is KDE). I'm actually not sure what flatpak frontend Mint uses. (just looked it up, seems flatpak is enabled by default on Mint, so that makes it easy.).

If intel graphics are the issue, what would you suggest i do?

Pretty sure that is the case. I have a laptop with an almost identical CPU/GPU, and the most I could get the game to do is launch up, then crash on DX11. On Vulkan, it wouldn't even get that far. Worse was that it would crash Mint as well, and make the screen show as if there were four wallpapers. It was odd... This was with the latest version of Mint on it.

I'm not sure how well it is supported in Linux, but maybe try finding an eGPU that works over Thunderbolt 4 (assuming you have TB4 ports).

Damn you did all that to help with my problem. Thanks for the advice. I'm using this computer temporarily until I'm able to get back to my rig at home. So I'll pass on the E-GPU bit. At least I know what the problem is. Thx

No problem. I read up that there were some who were able to get it to work with similar hardware under Windows, but I tend to think Intel's drivers are just good enough under Linux to be usable, but not much beyond that.
