In order to keep track of DND mechanics, they use small slices of time to determine actions even in the tabletop roleplaying aspects of the game. If you didn't have turns in this type of the game, it would be really rough...for players. You would not have enough time to have strategy and it would all devolve to casting the biggest spell wins, or having the most archers wins
