Level 4 reached. Need help choose special ability
Hi all,

I reached level 4 with my chars and I have to pick one ability for each character. I decided to go for the first one and increase my attributes for the chars. For example. 1 point on charisma to level 18 and 1 point to dexterity to level 16 for my bard. With the other chars I did the same with different point in diffent categories. I thought it could be a good desicion to choose to increase those things. What I am wondering is the following: Was my decision correct? I mean I do all the talking all the time with my very charismatic bard. I cant remember that I start a conversation with anybody else... So I was asking myself if I should have choose for the other 3 chars something else? I mean not to increase the abilites? Is this only important in dialoges or also in fight? Keep in mind that I do all the talking with my bard.

An additional question. When I start to talk with somebody with my bard and I realize that it would be better that one of my other chars could talk to somebody in a different better way, how can I do this? In the left corner I can change chars but this doesnt work with talking? Why change chars when the main char is talking to a character and I can only walk around with a different char.

Hope somebody can answer my 2 questions :-)

The feats are really based off of how you want to play your character. If you have a paladin or any melee character the feat that gives you the sentinel reaction ability is extremely good.

+2 Attribute is a good 4th lvl feat. I would give your combat initiater the Alert feat though.

Picking who leads/speaks is an important decision in the game. Typically, have your CHR character lead in town and your Perception character lead in the wilds.

Thank you for answering but I really dont get it 100% :-)
Are the ability values like strengh, charisma etc. only important when I roll activly a dice or are those abilites also in compat important? I dont know if I only choose the ability point increase for my bard or with my other chars too... I would level 2 points for gale, Wyll etc. or is this not necesary if only my main char is doing the talking?

Without providing any spoilers on other methods of increasing your ability scores, adding one point to both charisma and dexterity to 18 and 16 is a very good use of your 4th level feat. Since your bard is also likely the "face" of he party, another option might be the actor feat, which improves performance and deception skills and increases charisma by 1, all which would help in dialogue.

It's best to have one character to be skilled in as many dialogue skills as possible (performance, deception, intimidation, and persuasion). The bard is perfect for this as these skills are all available during character creation and can be added or enhanced (expertise) at certain levels specifically with the bard. There should be no need to initiate dialogue with any other character. This also gives you the versatility of swapping in other characters in your party for story reasons since you're not dependent on anyone but your own bard for dialogue.

those abilities have an effect on combat as well but only after you reach certain thresholds (which I forget at the moment but it's something like +1 for 10-14 in a stat +2 for 15-18, etc) Those + are the modifier that is added to your rolls in combat for saves against certain status effects and spells ie. If you get hit with shield bash you'll roll a d20 and add your dex modifier (the +) to it to see if you get knocked down or not. Honestly, If selecting those ability scores aren't going to push you into the next "tier" of that stat then it's not worth it in my opinion as the feat can be allocated somewhere else more efficiently. As an example I have a CHR 15 Paladin I'm playing and his Charisma is high enough that I've been successful on almost all my persuasion or intimidation rolls in the game. Pushing him higher than 15 would have a slight impact but not enough to warrant wasting a feat to increase it.

But I will not do something wrong if I choose the feat for everyone at level 4? I can go for a different feat at level 8 Ive read?

You get additional feats later on the more you level up a class. It is not a matter of "choose this now and replace it later". The thing is: what you need most for your characters or what you want most. Best is that you take your time and make yourself familiar with all Feats available. That makes it easier for you to ask whether an idea you have will work good or not. A list of the Feats you can find here: https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Feats

Thank you :-) You answered to my questions already very often :-)
BTW. Today is my game very slow at startup. I click on Play on Steam and it takes like a minute to open the launcher and when I click in the launcher on play it takes again 45 seconds to actually open the game... The problem happend only today... maybe slow server?

Probably bad Windows setting. Do yourself a favour, restart your PC and skip the launcher.

I recommend method C - most players use method A for simplicity.

If the issue persists with long loading you can try cleaning your game cache

the first part of the guide

It could be a Larian server congestion if you use cross-save. But if you do not use cross-save I recommend to skip the launcher entirely. That should resolve your issues with the loading of the launcher. And yeah, it happens that I enjoy helping out newbies with the game. So feel free to ask. A lot of things I also try to cover in my beginner guides you can find in the guide section. Should be something missing, I try to add later on.

Thank you very much. I dont use Cross save. Ill will wait one more day and see how it starts tomorrow. When its still slow I will follow your guide with the launcher. Can the amount of savegames have somthing to do with the problem?

In general: no. Only when you use Steam Cloud Service for the game, it might take a while to synchronise. Mostly after playing. Not before. I am not using Steam Cloud Service for the game myself, as it is known to cause issues. It has become better due to adjustments in regards the amount reserved for the savegame, but it still can glitch out.

Even with over 200 savegames my game loads as fast as with one single savegame.

I see... But how do you backup your safes? I use steam cloud.

One question. I choose the feat where you get 2 extra healt points each level you reach... Im already level 4. I did not get the point for the level 1-3 or is it only valid at level 4 and upwards? If so what happens when I choose the feat at level 8? Is it then upwards level 8 and not for level 1-7?
JabroniCorleone Dec 27, 2023 @ 1:51pm
Sorry my mistake. I did get all the point also afterwards... :-) I heard tough is a good thing to pick from but I also heard some say its not that of an advantage to have more HP... mhm....

You should get the extra health for the levels before as well. It might need a long rest or difficulty change to recognise that correctly. Sometimes the GUI can be fiddly. Feel free to ask if you wish to learn why people rarely take that Feat. Or as suggested before: ask about Feats like you just did to learn more about them if the wiki is unclear.
