Can I play split-screen as one of the story characters? Drop-in co-op style?
I helped get one of my siblings a PS5 and Baldur's Gate 3 for Christmas. Right now he's playing through the game as a regular custom character, and he just dropped on the beach.

I'm aware the game has local co-op. But I don't really want to fully commit and make my own Tav to accompany him throughout the entire journey. Is it possible to do a "drop-in" kinda local co-op and just play as one of the origin party members and drop-out when I'm done playing? For example he controls his Tav and Shadowheart, while I control Gale and Karlach.

No. That is not possible. It would be possible with another custom Tav. But an origin character has to be selected at the very start of the game, and cannot be dismissed as the story will be written around them as well. It could be interesting to do such, to experience multiple origin stories - but I rather recommend you go with a customise Tav. That way your sibling can store the unused character in Wither's Wardrobe instead of being forced to have one of the companions tagging along all the time because its an origin character.

That's a shame. I feel like I wouldn't be able to play a lot of the time, and would have a lot of good gear he could be using instead. Would be annoying to shuffle around all those items..

Tip: do not think about that too much. The shuffle is easy enough. And imagine if you join it sometimes in the future: as long as they store good stuff in the camp chest - all you need is just to equip within four minutes to get ready. While getting the stuff off your character is something easily done for your sibling. That, when playing a custom Tav which you can drop-in and off any time.

If you having fun together playing, that is more worth than any tiny nuisance it brings with it. Give it a try and look for yourself. And if it does not fit: they store your character (nude) in the wardrobe and play on. Simple as that.
Just, stop the thinking right there about that.

I suppose you're right, yeah. He just said that he wanted his first playthrough to not be a full on co-op playthrough. I already sit around and watch him play, just kinda trying to help make stuff clearer (he's never played D&D before) and figured being able to control half his party to show him how I play would be neat.

I'll have to see if I wanna go as far as creating a whole Tav to accompany him occasionally, does make me wish the party size could go above 4 too since he'll have to swap out one of his origin party members to include me.
