Personally 1 is very skippable. I didn't think it was particularly great then compared to the Dark Sun games and it really didn't age well
If you can get over that system, and can get past the oldies style due to their age, they are definitely worth it, though.
i had fun with them, but much for the same reason i dont play pong i wouldn't play bg1/2 again: the gameplay does not keep up, and in a bad way, my rose tinted goggles cannot cover that up.
Though I guess you wouldn't appreciate the returning companion cameos
2nd edition DnD (THAC0!) is a weird beast. Once you understand the mechanics and how to make them work in your favour, the combat can be a blast.
You will find yourself save-scumming. Embrace it, the RNG system is harsh. Many of the encounters can switch from a complete party-wipe to a triumphant slaughter because of 1 poor roll.
Real-Time-With-Pause requires lots of PAUSING. Many of us look at this through rose-tinted-glasses as the epitome of Baldur's Gate's identity. I've enjoyed both, but I'd recommend having a fiddle with the pause settings.
Most of the 'Infinity Engine' games such as Icewind Dale 1/2, Planscape Torment etc are great games and well worth your time for the story alone.
Also, it's interesting to see people talk about RTwP as if it's too much for them but when somebody complains about turn-based combat, they grab the tea and sip it with their pinkies held high. I mean, it's not that complicated. You can pause with the space button which is that big ass button on your keyboard. It's not rocket science.
nobody is asking bg1-2 to change, but people do try to change bg3 cause they dislike it.
but that rtwp is why i can ever reccomend those 2.
I just think it's a bad gameplay loop.
I'm fine with full ARPG and I'm even better with TB, but RTWP mixes the worst of TB combat with the worst parts of ARPG to make an even worse gameplay loop.
It still behaves like a TB game (which it still is in it's heart) and doesn't allow for taking full advantage of reactionary gameplay, but uses the crutch of either pausing for an inferior tb-style gameplay, or in later titles scripting and automation to take gameplay away from the player.
And the moment you as a dev have to add automation to make your game enjoyable, you should ask yourself if you are still going in the right direction...
Fallout 1 is pretty great, too. It's turn based. You like that one?
I like it
Automation can be dope, look at Satisfactory
