Newbie, level 3 and no idea where I'm supposed to go
I have been to the druid village so my stated objective is to head for the goblin camp. There are about 400 billion of them, I can shave that number down by poisoning the drink tub before heading inside where I find 400 billion more of them. Got absolutely creamed even when I tried sniping them from above, so after a few hours of trying and failing, I gave up and started a new game. This time, I ventured into the teahouse instead, where I'm also getting absolutely creamed. Enemies both outnumber and outlevel me. I'm sure there's lots of other places I'm missing, but I literally have no idea what direction I'm supposed to head in order to find opponents that are appropriate both for my characters and - more importantly - for myself. Add to this that the map itself really isn't helping; everything looks the same so I'm finding it real hard to distinguish one place from another. I'm playing on Explorer because I'm not a DnD expert, still getting my head bashed in wherever I go. Finally; is there really any point in trying to avoid combat through dialogue and clever tricks? It feels as though what I'm really avoiding is xp that's already in short supply as it is.

There is a level cap and the experience you get from dialogues is enough to get you through the game, as well as the experience points you get from mindless killing. Trying to get both will maximise your experience points income but will do no good for the actual gameplay of a role play game.

Have a look here - there I posted an easy to use route you can take

TLDR. What is your question?
FruitFly Dec 24, 2023 @ 2:08am
the main problem you face is that you are underleveld for that camp. have you cleared the underground chappel in the starting zone ? have you cleared the harpies in the druid camp ? have you cleared the blighted village on the way to the big goblin camp ? also have you cleared the beasties north of that camp ? and retrieved one of the companions there ? if you did all this you should be arround lvl 5. then you should be able to take on the goblin camp.

Don't focus on the main quest. The game is designed for the player to explore. You can do the game by staying focused on the main quest, but it's way harder (less levels and fewer good items).

Also, like any game of this type the futher you go from the starting area, the harder the fighting get. The Tea house is one of the most distant place on this map...

Explore the abandonned village and around the druid grove, you will find plenty of easier fights (there is at least one "big" thing to discover in any structure in the abandonned village).

For the fight against the goblin camp you should probably do it at level 4 (getting to level 5 before it without going to even more dangerous areas is hard). But for sure it's a challenge for a new player, there is a few options to make it way easier, but it would be spoiler.

I did the underground chapel, but I haven't found any harpies/beach that way and the only ones I fought in the blighted village were the ones by the windmill. I don't think I've found anything north of there yet, so I'm still level 3 and getting beat to a pulp whenever I try to poke my nose anywhere. Will double back to the druid grove and see if I can find that beach next.

The Beach isn't that easy to find and depending on luck can be a dangerous fight. I recommand you explore a bit more the destroyed village. There is more to it than what you saw.

But like always, if something seems too dangerous just go away, you can come back later.

Probably got spoilers. If you don't want to know them, don't read beyond this.

-Blighted Village, you can use a rogue to even up the odds.(Sneak in and backstab, usually enough to kill most goblins.) You can make it even easier if you respec into thief rogue subclass, you can re stealth and run away after an attack. You can make the windmill fight trivial with minor illusion. Cast, goblins run in to see what the hell it is, then get smoked with AoE. Spiked growth can cheese it too.

-You can repec as much as you want. You just gotta pickpocket Withers (The dead guy you find in the underground temple)

-Rob the druid grove blind. Pickpocket merchants and get some +1 armor and weapons. Makes things easier. Gold is harder to rob, but you can sell what you steal back to the merchants. (Yeah I know, cheese, but it works and hasn't been patched out, so looks like it is intended.) But make sure to do it when nobody is around. Turnbased mode and Minor Illusion are OP'd as ???? for this. Experiment, you'll figure out how to do it.

-Spell Calm Emotions makes the Harpy Fight easier than pie.

-Don't try the Hag in the swamp until you are at-least level 5. You can try it at lower levels with some cheese, but will more than likely get smoked.

-Sleep is a great spell for evening up the odds. Any form of control spell is. Tasha's Hideous laughter is phenomenal at this level for taking a baddie out of the fight.

-Minor Illusion is great to bunch up enemies and AoE them down. (Minor Illusion+Fireball at level 5 is pretty standard for me)

-Send in a rogue in stealth to get the lay of the land. Recon so to speak. Then you'll know what you are up against. Look for environmental stuff you can use to your advantage. Most Barrels in the game go boom. Find a barrel? Minor illusion then firebolt cantrip to make it go booooooommmm. You can pick up barrels and move them or save them for later. They are heavy, so don't carry them around unless you got a specific use for them, store them are your camp. Barrelmancy is standard fare for Larian games.

-Rest as needed. Food can be scarce in the begining, so hire up a druid/ranger to make you some goodberries from the spell to save on some food. You can also pickpocket plenty of rations from the first halfling merchant you meet in the druid grove. Perfect, as he stands with his back too you and doesn't move, and very few guards. You gotta move the Tieflings close by though. Easy enough, just talk to them and they move on.

-You need either darkvision and/or light so you can see in dark areas so you can hit your target.

-There is a cave with an owlbear. Tough fight, don't smoke the little guy.

-Explore and try to do things to "break" the game. This is intended.

-Random numbers are random numbers, and sometimes you have a ???? streak and miss like 40 attacks in a row. It happens.

-Using a spell/ ranged weapon in melee range confers disadvantage, makes it much harder to land a hit.

-Sometimes the "MONGO SMASH" option isn't always the best.

-Attack from elevation, it gives you a bonus on your attacks.

-Push people into void zones and/or off high places. They fall and die/take damage. Thunderwave is a great spell for this.

All I can think of this early in the morning, right off the top of my head.

I have now done all of these, plus I took out the pair inside the barn in the blighted village, as well as the group guarding the approach to the goblin camp. I'm still about 25% away from reaching level 4. I've spotted a group of enemies further to the north but those are level 5 so that's probably not a good idea for now.

Clear as much of the Act1 map as you can for XP to get to Level 4. The blighted village is a reality check. You'll need a group and the player skills to clean that village. Be sure to save the gnome tied to the windmill.

The Absolute quests will lead you to become an apparent devotee, and that allows you peaceful access into the primary goblin lair north of the blighted village.
