Wood Elf. Ability scores depends on how you wish to play the ranger. Wisdom will be your spellcasting modifier provider. I played a ranger without putting a single point in it because I focused on melee and ranged weapons. So yeah. Depends on what you wish from a ranger. In doubt you can use the default stats and respec later on.
Have a look here while downloading for additional information on the class, and some tips to get started

I gave him the savage attacker feat, an asi to get dex to 18, and 1 rank in fighter to get the great weapon fighting perk
Ranger’s are fun. Not everything is about min-max.
This is a great mix. I ran asterion this way on my first run and it was putting out a lot of damage while rarely taking any
And what is wrong with a Ranger? After all with my current build I would Solo with my current ranger.
Sadly the TWF in 5th edition is bad. (Uses bonus action.)
Also...funny thing but wood elf and wood half elf are very good choices.
Increase your initiative and speed(momentum and speed items.) You'll be able to strike from the shadows and run away like hell. (Instakill strike one enemy then run away hide, rinse and repeat:D)
Carry 3 boxes with you for permanent height advantage if you really wanna cheese(rogue doesn't need this).
For race Halfling for lucky is great for any class. Gnome is ok for dark vision, not that it's hard to light up enemies.
For stats: dex is your money maker. Con is always safe secondary choice(you can respec the stats so don't worry about it too much).
If your plan was to go melee ranger then just go fighter.
Two weapon fighting bad? Nah man, if you get twf and the dual wield feat you’re rockin. Throw in an asi and hag hair to get to 20, and the savage attacker feat and you’ll be wrecking everything.
Then you run a elixir of visciousness, undermountain dagger, and the hood and your chance to crit is 20%, then add risky ring for auto sneak attacks, and any gear you have that rides damage onto each hit and there isn’t much you can’t utterly decimate
Works best on a 4 thief, 8 fighter (champion for 25% crit rate) imho but you can do 4 thief, 5 ranger, 3 fighter
