Get the moonlantern from the drider instead. Or from B's chambers.
That ambush is one of the worst designed encounters in the game - for the very reason you state. Even if you are a very expert player you cannot guarantee to save Isobel first attempt if you play it "straight" (i.e. you don't prepare), it's too dependent on exactly what Isobel does and even more so on the initiative rolls.
But to be fair the fight is very easy if you do prepare for it and really if you're trying an Honour run you should already know how to prepare for it and what the main moves are to protect Isobel to avoid this eventuality.
