Dame Aylin: A Measured Response

Hello there,

I’ve been hearing some fedora tippin fellas have been slandering Dame Aylin’s name on these forums, so I will be white-knighting and simping real hard for her throughout this thread to show them the light with facts & logic.

1. Exposition, shmexposition

Have you heard of the Nightsong? They say it’s an ancient artifact hidden eons ago by Selunite priests in the Underdark. What is it? A weapon? A powerful tool of the ancients? Who knows! These mercenary guys sure seem interested, they were sent here from Baldur’s Gate by a powerful Sorcerer you say? Hmmmm the mystery deepens. What is the Nightsong? Where is it? Why are powerful people after it? We’ll never know I guess…

Oh nvm it’s just an Aasimar trapped in a sharran temple by some undead neckbeard incel.

2. That’s what she said

“Everything happened so fast” they claim, but what did you expect? You spent the last act and a half looking for the Nightsong and now you found her, congratulations! Do you free her or do you slay her?

Now time for facts, I think the average Fantasy RPG enjoyer will agree that the freeing of the Nightsong is one the best Fantasy RPG moments of the past 3-4 years, those who don’t have lost all joy in existence and should reassess their priorities in life, and these are the facts.

3. Logic

Aylin is an Aasimar, effectively read “demi-god”, you need to take into account her socio-cultural background before making assumptions about how she would react in any given situation.

Also: “My libido is so low I wouldn’t wanna be intimate with my hot goth gf after 100 years of maidenless imprisonment” is not as good of an argument as you think.

4. LGBTWHO? LGBTWHERE?

Now I’ve seen a lot of controversy about how Aylin is arbitrarily lesbian, and that her mere presence is somehow pandering to queer folk and whatnot.

Isn’t it truly fascinating that you can create a mod that changes her gender, but does not in any way shape or form affect her story?

Her background and story are so bland that attributing any kind of agenda to her presence is beyond comical. I invite anyone to offer direct proof of the contrary. Time to wake the f*ck up samurai… we’ve got a city to burn.

Which is weird because no one complains about a character being "arbitrarily straight". Neither orientation is more or less "arbitrary" than the other.

Nightsong and Hand of the Inheritor from Wrath of the Righteous are two of my favourite characters. I think I just have a soft spot for melodramatic thunder-voiced angels with wrathful streaks.

Well, it's the same logic that says a man and woman kissing is sweet and cute and perfectly find for kids to see, but 2 women or 2 men kissing is "sexualized content" and kids shouldn't see it! A school teacher talking about her husband is fine, but a schoolteacher even passingly mentioning her WIFE is "GROOMING TEH KIDZ!!!"

It's not that complicated. If you're part of a minority group, you're not likely to wonder why you're running into the majority. The reverse is you have the majority encountering someone from an out group. Someone is going to take notice. Then you have to take in consideration that these are hand-crafted encounters, not random chance, not arbitrary. That's not the issue, though, it's the reaction, isn't it?

I suppose it is the reaction that's just weird to me. I've always just viewed it as weird that one is okay, while the other isn't. One is day to day, the other is pitchforks and torches. When basically the only differences comes down to body shape at the end of the day

I was initially set aback by Dame Aylin but then it clicked that the writers might have been trying to create another Minsc: butt-kicking for goodness, protecting her witch cleric, doing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ when angered... I wonder if Valeria was supposed to be her Boo at some point. Now I like Aylin, she is fun.

My only complaint is that she might be setting excessive expectations for future aasimar characters. No, aasimar should not be read as demigod. Dame Aylin just happens to be both of these things, while a typical aasimar would simply be the celestial version of a tiefling. I hope the developers will remember that should they consider adding playable races. I want aasimar Tav.

Edit: Hearts, really? Alright, anger makes her do things that are less than thought-out.

Ptichforks and torches. The things that get me is when they flat out say that they found out abc character was part xyz out group, so they yeeted them off a cliff. I call it out every time.
