lookout for Speak with Animals potions, and you swap the spell out later
I personally always want to have the option available, because speaking with all the animals is fun.
I personally only use disguise self if I have to speak with a dead I killed myself. otherwise I barely use it. I also have the mask of the shapeshifter from the digital deluxe...
So both are not really all that important, but if I had to choose I'd probably go for speak with animals...
yes it is literally the same.. So you can have that helmet in your hotbar and you can swap to it anytime you feel the need to use it, and then when you are done with it swap back. Desguise itself can be a useful spell, it can give you a few different interactions with certain npcs, also it can allow you to get the equipment bonus that are racial locked from certain items in the game for example.
And yeah as other have said, speak with animals is probably more useful in the early game, (you won't have that many ingredients for the potions so it's better not to waste them too frequently in the early game) and then later, when you have more money and more ingredients for the potion, you can swap that spell for a different spell.
