Mage/Wizard Creation question
Hi,
I will purchase the game in a few moment and Id like to play as a mage/wizard. At the char creation I have to choose between some spells. I am sticking with this spells for the rest of the game or can I purchase/find the other ones that I did not choose?

You can learn new spells from scrolls you find in the field or at shops, as well as two additional spells every time you gain a wizard level.

So it is not a disaster if I choose at the beginning a spell I did not like later in the game?

You can learn them all. But be prepared to have a list of spells written on a paper so you can "easily" check which spells you already know when dealing with scrolls in your inventory and at vendors. For some reason there is no UI for this in a 2023 game, while BG1 had this feature from day 1.

wizards can learn from scrolls and also get spells upon leveling, so they end up with the most choice in the end.

You learn from scrolls - get most of your spells that way.
Handy tip is to pickpocket the traders as scrolls are expensive.

Try to pick spells in your levelling that are hard to get or don't come in a scroll.

First level spells I've not seen scrolls for are :
Disguise Self, Enhance Leap, Find Familiar, Longstrider, and Shield.

Unfortunately there isn't a list that I know of.

Yeah wizard is the way to go if you want a lot of spells to pick from because they can learn from scrolls. You can also always change your spell loadout by going to the spellbook tab in the inventory screen

Thank you all. So if I get this right: The spells I choose at the beginning are only the ones to start with. For example if I dont choose the "rain" spell than I get purchase it later?

you can also just get it upon level up.

there are no "exclusive" spells, if your the right level for it, you can learn it upon level up, or even find the scroll for it.

some things might be missing? idk what spells don't show up as scrolls.

Yup, for wizards.

Sorcerers, Bards, and Warlocks don't end up with all the spells - the other spellcasters either get them all or can learn them all from scrolls (Wizards).

Unless I'm forgetting someone.

Im new to Baldurs Gate but played some Pillars of Eternity before. I would like to be a wizard but I also heard its not easy for beginners. Do you guy recommend something else? Like shield and sword char? Im just scared it might be boring. Wizard seems quite cool :-)

The spells you can learn the ones you do not choose later. So don't stress too much about it. Chromatic Orb and Magic Missile are spells that are universally useful all game. Any you don't pick in character creation you can "learn" by spending money to add the scroll to your spell book, assuming you are high enough in level to learn it.

The cantrips though you cannot learn from scrolls so there is more weight on picking good cantrips. I recommend choosing light, firebolt (or ray of frost), shocking grasp, friends & mage hand. As you level up you do get to choose one or two more but the starting cantrips are spells you will spam throughout the game. So they are more impactful than the level 1 spell choices.

Go wizard, there’s nothing about it you won’t pick up naturally. The easier version of a spellcaster in this game is a warlock and he just spams one spell (eldrich blast) over and over again. I thought dnd was complicated as well before trying this game but if you take a moment to read things as you go you’ll be fine

IMO: Wizards are the most fun characters, you do need to be a little cautious and not just charge into battle though. Use your melee characters up front, wizard and cleric in the back.

They're squishy, which is why they're said to not be beginner friendly, but I still recommend them even for first time play.

Just approach battle a little more strategically and it's fine.

So you mean I will move my party forward and keep my main Char wizard behind everybody? Just wondering because I saw you can control you char directly - means if I control a melee char in front and my main char walks behind does it not feel like my main char is not my main char becaue i control the melee char? Hope you know what I mean. Sorry but english is not my motherlanguage

On normal it's not a big deal if you have the wizard selected and in front. Just back off some when fights start.
