Black Veins from the tadpole in act 2/3

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone knows if the black veins are like something that happens to you no matter what when you meet the Emporer? I did the option of I dont want to be illithid and didnt want the tadpole but it gave me the black veins all over my face anyway?

Does not happen to my character who use no tadpoles and my character who use few tadpoles.

Happens to my character who ate the astral tadpole.

This is so weird because I didn't eat it at all, I said I didn't want it, is that the option you chose and had to role for it? thank you :)

If you've used tadpoles, you'll have to pass a check. If you fail the roll you use the astral tadpole anyway. I only used 3 in one of my saves and had to pass the check, it's pretty high too, like a 21. So if you have the black veins and didn't agree to it, it's because the check wasn't passed.

Okay thank you, yeah its a 21 and I had no rerolls or buffs to my rolls :'( it sucks because i dont want to gross black veins hahaha

I chose the option to put it away when it was offered. Had the option to crush it as well.

It's a dice check with difficulty depending on how many tadpoles you've used in your playthrough. You can get by without the veins at all if you don't use many tadpoles or get lucky. Just refuse the gift offered to you when the time comes.

Veins are the only way to unlock tier 3 Mindflayer abilities though.

I don’t think there was a single playthrough that I refused the tadpole on any character lol. Didn’t even realize you need a check if you don’t want it, I mean why wouldn’t anyone want it it’s the best thing ever

Nexus Mods has a couple 'remove illithid' effect and it should just be a texture replacer so it shouldn't require a mod loader. In case you want to get rid of it in your current save and not have to restart all over again kinda thing.

RP and aesthetics is exactly why you SHOULD be getting it

At this stage your tadpole should be growing and you should start looking more infected in general, almost turning into mindflayer should be mandatory part of the story progression to show how urgently you need to stop the brain . On top of all the goodies you get from it

Eh, personally I just can't bring myself to do my girl Tavs dirty like that :P
Will probably make a dragonborn char to experiment with those powers - should look less jarring on them :)

you can eat it or connect with it to get get the astral veins. not eating it means you can give it to all your companions as well if i was interpreting what i was doing correct. i turned most of my camp. myself include. but never ate it. just connnected with it. ive never refused it because beyond a story beat i find its useless to deny the tadpoles.
