Great game, should not have won GOTY
BG3 is immaculate. A beautiful chefs kiss to the long lost era of good games. Frankly, it's probably the best game out there right now in almost every category. It deserves awards and praises and accolades. It more than deserved the wins in all the other categories.

But let's not forget that it has basically been in beta release for years, and development for even longer. It took a clean sweep at the game awards, for good reason, but it had a significant and potentially unfair advantage against other GOTY candidates because it had a TON of community involvement and active feedback during those years in pre-release. So it might technically be in that category with it's full release, but it feels kinda wrong that it got the spot.

So it shouldn't have won because they valued community involvement?

So, Larian Studios was 'wrong' for extensively testing their game and involving the community? And should be punished for that?

I don't agree with this at all.

Perhaps other companies could take notes instead.

Also: Hades.

There's nothing stopping other studios from allowing this level of feedback in their development. Sounds like a them problem.
Also like Tears of the Kingdom didn't benefit from feedback from BotW, they're borderline the same game.

I don't understand this line of thinking. It isn't an unfair advantage to build the kind of game your community wants. More games should take this approach. So many studios and franchises have established fan bases and instead of releasing flop after business suite structured flop they should maybe listen to what the people want and go from there.

You act like no gamers have ever tried to tell the people that didn't win how they could have made a great game with their established stories and characters.

I see no difference.

Well, I wouldn't say nothing, since most other studios with Larian's level of resource are beholden to suits who seem to have little care or concept of community engagement beyond reaching into their wallets, but I digress.
It's more than just feedback or good design. Which they had, don't get me wrong.

It's just doesn't feel like it released *this* year. A playable, semi-finished product has been available for a long time and it's been an ongoing process.

You're not wrong - BG3 is still in EA.

And I love that I'm not. This game is going to live longer than skyrim did.

It is a weird way to farm clowns, I'll give you that, but it seems to be working so far.

No one said the other developers couldn't ask for feedback either.

It just wouldn't line up with Investor interests though, so most don't bother.

Not to mention that it's not like the other games were only developed in the year of 2023, so that kind of argument is lacking any depth tbh. IDK wtf this post is for.

Some people are not meant to be creators but merely consumers.

Nothing wrong with that.

So...Larian's approach shouldn't be held up as an example for the rest of the industry?..
