A good melee fighter can kill the cat right off the bat.
Leveling up always helps.
Yurgir was the most anticlimatic fight ever. If you want something else than meaningless ranting, best you share your character sheets.
Do I get the XP for helping him out? And how do I help him out?
In a lot of places if a fight is too much it's not a bad idea to backtrack and explore. You can usually find easier fights or quests that might give you the experience you need.
Different amount of XP, not sure what the difference is. If you enter the area by following the displacer beast it should trigger the cut scene where you get dialogue. From there you should be able to work out a way to try and help him. There are several of these, but my favorite is actually getting him to stop hearing the song.
If you take the dialogue route then there are a bunch of outcomes that range from fighting everything to nothing at all. Play around with your answers and if there are dialogue checks you see that you can't pull off then switch to a character that can if you think it will lead you in a direction you might like more.
Your party may be wrong. Your builds may be wrong. Your tactics may be wrong. Your skills used may be wrong. Everything may be wrong.
Who knows, zero information has been provided other than whatever is being done is wrong.
