Titanstring is an insanely potent weapon, used very frequently for 1 round boss killer builds, for good reason.

Personally I prefer dual hand crossbows, for that bonus attack to finish off low health enemies. With a good Astarion Thief build, he's taking out 3 enemies per turn.

i liked Dual Crossbows and Sharpshooter early on, and switched to Titanstring after Extra Attack + strength elixirs

I usually do dual crossbow and switch at act3 but i didn't use range weapon on my honor run. It really depend on who's taking the extra damage items, if you attack 2/3 times then go titanstring, if you attack 5/6 times dual xbows are probably better.

not sure if this is common knowledge or not but the Titan bows damage bonus procs on the elemental damage from special arrows which gives it some big damage even early on

Because they are a DRS
That mechanic was removed in honour mode though.

Damage rider sources were completely removed in honour mode
You get the damage, but only as a damage rider/flat modifier.

Which is better; Karlach or Astarion? Neither? Both? Just give Karlach the Titan String and have Astarion use dual crossbows.

Astarion is purely mechanically, the strongest companion (i.e what he gets as a baseline, irrespective of class choice), while shadowheart is the weakest (because her power is tied to the items she has exclusive access to rather than coming from her innately)

Titanstring Bow with 20 DEX and the Club Of Hill Giant Strength is incredibly strong. You can get this very early in the game and it will pretty much carry you through the entirety of the rest.

Another alternative are dual-crossbows accompanied with 20 DEX, along with the Risky Ring (ACT 2) and Sharpshooter trait. The ring grants you Advantage on attacks, making it impossible for you to miss.

If you are a Ranger who is multiclassing into Rogue, you can trigger Sneak Attack easily without even thinking about it and do over 90 damage per turn without any issues.

90 damage per turn is reasonable at level 5.
5x that and you're looking at a decent lategame build.
