For example, approaching the Zhentarim being besieged by the gnolls (usually the indicator of triggering the event is an auto save) and then resting means the gnolls overrun the cave and kill them.
Or if you approach waukeen's rest, the burning inn, and rest before resolving it, the people in the building die.
You usually have plenty of information when something needs to be dealt with in a timely manner, but you are certainly free to ignore it and let whatever happens, happen.
In general, the game is not on a 'timer' and Long Rests don't advance the game world in that specific way.
Surprisingly not.
It would have been interesting if Honour Mode would have added such a timer.
