It’s daft. It shouldn’t work. Somehow it does.
The way Armor Of Agathys synergises with the damage resistance from Rage is really fun to use
That has to be one of the most unhinged combinations I've ever heard of lmao. So obviously I have to try it.
It is certainly unhinged, but I like trying wacky combos like that.
I'm contemplating making it an Archfiend Warlock instead for the free Temp HP, but im not sure how that interacts with the Temp HP from Armor Of Agathys
Unhinged is always the best. DMd one DnD run where one of my players was a Blood Hunter with a fear of blood lmao. That led to some interesting situations.
Also it's great to use Belm's Whirlwind attack, hit 5 targets, throw 5 smites and still have another attack.
for equipment use potent robe, risky ring, crit bow, crit dagger, charisma hat, con amulet, ring of protection, weave cloak, spellmight gloves and shield of undevout, boots of stormy glamour.
going 17 charisma, 16 dex , 8 con (you get 23 con from amulet anyway).
then using ethel hair+ mirror of loss+ ability improvement feat to get to 22 charisma. the +2 charisma hat turns it to 24 which is the max possible.
so the final stats are 24 cha, 23 con, 16 dex (and some points in the other stats as you like, doesnt matter that much)
with 24 cha you get +7 cha modifier which is the maximum available. warlock ads this to each of your 3 eldrich blasts. potent robe adds it again to each of your blasts. it also gives you great accuracy especially combined with advantage from risky ring. this allows you to use spellmight gloves which will add another 1-8 damage to each of your eldritch blasts. so each of the 3 hits will do 16-32 damage and thats before factoring in crits and the added damage from hex.
defensively you get a huge bonus to armour class from dipping 1 lvl into barbarian and getting unarmoured defense. ac is 10(base)+1(portent robe)+3(dex)+6(unarmoured defense)+2(shield)+1(ring of protection)=23
you get a big bonus to critrate in order to trigger mortal reminder (and increase damage):
your second feat is spell sniper which increases critchance, you get crit from champion, crit from dagger and crit from bow. this means any roll of 15 or higher is a crit which translates to a 25% critrate on hit, but since you almost always have advantage with risky ring you get a 43.75% critrate per hit. considering eldritch blast has 3 hits you get a 82.2% chance for at least one crit which triggers mortal reminder.
the shield and cloak help you to make mortal reminder stick when you do land a crit.
the boots add another debuff. note that each eb hit triggers the boots as the pushback seems to be considered a debuff.
disadvantage on saving throws from risky ring is ofc something to keep in mind, but there are things that help here. the amulet is great for con saving throws which is important to keep concentration for hex, and the ring of protection is a general help to saving throws, mitigating the problem. also this build is good at positioning and keeping distance, even hiding, which also helps out. if you dont get hit you dont need saving throws.
the 5 lvls in thief are just for its great utility. not only getting a second bonus action, but especially getting the amazing mobility with the uncanny actions means you can always position yourself and also hit hard at the same time. never worry about getting threatend or cought in a corner. getting more movement to find the sometimes restricting direct line of sight for eldritch blast etc is just great value.
as fighting style from fighter you have to choose protection as defense doesnt work since you dont want to use armour in order to get the 6 ac from barbarian.
regarding race i like the drow for the superior darkvision. thanks to thief you dont really need the increased movement speed from wood elf.
it is worth considering replacing the boots and cloak with evasive shoes and cloak of protection. this is a more defensive setup which pumps your ac to 25 and further helps mitigate the risky ring st disadvantage. but i didnt feel the need for it and also i had other teammembers who could make better use of those items.
in the end you get a cantrip that is stronger than most spells. it can easily deal 80+ damage per turn (on a burst turn using action surge haste and other buffs this can be significantly increased), keep them at distance with frightening and pushing, while at the same time allowing you amazing positioning from thief. perfect for hit and run but also good in a team simply for damage, debuffs and positioning. all of this while maintaining good defensive capabilities thanks to 23 ac 23 con and 7 temp hit points every turn from the robe (also 2 bonus actions per turn to drink potions or for second wind if needed). probably the only weaknesses of this build are the lack of aoe damage and team support (healing and buffing) but those roles can be filled with other teammembers). whats also amazing is that you really dont depend on resting much because you rely on cantrips and not on spell slots. ofc hex is great but you can do most fights without it if you dont want to rest yet.
now this is the best version of this build that i found and many pieces are only accesible at the very end of the game. but you can get the build to work slightly altered already in a2. get the potent robe, the 18 dex gloves and all pieces of the build you can already get at this point (rings, crit dagger, boots). instead of going 16 dex 8 con you go 8 dex 16 con. the dex gloves will turn it to 18 dex 16 con. not as powerful as the final build but certainly strong enough for the enemies you encounter there.
Even your smites can smite. It's funny having 5 smite reaction conformation tabs on your screen.
Bard / figher
Shadow monk/ thief/ spore Druid
Tempest/ sorc/ wizzard
Blade warlock/ fighter/ paladin
Honorable mentions Sorc/ lock and Gloom/ assassin
Feels amazing just nuking the strongest boss enemies in the opening turn. One-shot the Spectator in the Underdark at level 5. Pretty much the same with every other boss encounter, with the exception of Grym due to it's lightning immunity.
