unless you're really mean to companions and ignore their personal quests, it's hard not to have high approval halfway through the game.
The bg3.wiki has surprisingly lots of information on the matter of approval and goes into great detail for such interactions. Might be a wiki of use for you.

Still, did the whole run without needing Volo to do his thing. If anything, it's just a minor buff that may or may not work, should the die be in your favor.
