What the hell does ". . . casting a spell while in melee" mean?
I don't understand what this item does. Please help. Vivacious Cloak: You gain 8 Temporary Hit Points for 4 turns after casting a spell while in melee. What the hell does "casting a spell while in melee" mean.

Being in melee means being within melee engagement range (on the actual tabletop it is 1 tile/5 feet away from another enemy, not sure what the exact distance is in this since it doesn't use tiles).

It means ... exactly that.
If you cast a spell while in melee range (you get the "Threatened" debuff), you get whatever bonus comes after that condition.

I assume it means within melee range of an active enemy during combat. Maybe even having been hit or having hit. Don't really know. :/

If you cast a spell while someone with a weapon is close enough to you for them to smack you with it. You know... in close combat. It might not consider reach weapons to be "in melee", but it should apply to most other non-ranged weapons.

Thanks. :-) This item is completely useless for my ranged spell caster.

Until an enemy dashes into melee range.

That's kind of the point. It's intended for a specialized build.

I bet it would proc often on a cleric who was often using spirit guardians.

Nah the four turn duration is to allow a pure caster to either survive a melee attack or get out of melee range of enemies. If you're building for a melee caster you would very likely want something that is less of an emergency use.

Has anyone tested if the cloak triggers on Shield reaction spells? Because that would be kind of cool.

I dunno, 4 turns is a pretty long part of a combat usually. If you aren't taking any damage in four turns while in melee it's true the cloak isn't doing much but you're also doing very well anyway.
