Basilisk Oil question

What, SPECIFICALLY can Basilisk oil be used for? What kind of clue are you given that BO will get you anything? Or is this just an area (early Underdark) that you need to have it to resurrect any party members that may get Petrified? IOW is basilisk oil critical for any Quest/Item? In my first run thru I needed it once, and that didn't help much as far as being Quest Critical. Thanx for any enlightenment!

Sometimes your characters can get petrified, or you may run into petrified NPCs. Basilisk Oil removes petrification. That's it.

I also applied it to petrified dwarf in Ethel's basement. But it's just for fun as I understand. Don't know such quests where it's critical. Maybe somebody knows more.

In the Underdark, there is a specific encounter where there are petrified bodies around the arena. If you de-petrify them, they join the fight with you instead of the normal sequence.
