Combat tips for a new player?
I'm 9 hours deep into a fighter playthrough and I still have no clue what I'm doing during combat. I feel like my party either has hard hitters who miss half of their attacks or magic users who barely deal any damage. The only character who has felt consistent so far is Astarion. Every major fight I'm having to fight for my life spamming healing potions and praying to RNGesus that I get good rolls.

I'd normally try to learn mechanics on my own but its so overwhelming to me. The only other RPG somewhat like this I've played is New Vegas.

I recommend to read this first for basic understanding

It will give you ideas how to improve your accuracy.

Early game is pretty hard because you are under equipped, under leveled, and in this case also under-informed as the combat mechanics. It will get better, but here’s some tips that will hopefully help you out a bit:

Having a balanced party is very helpful. You want someone who can take a sword to the face and be fine, you want someone who can cast spells for damage, you want someone who can cast spells to buff your party or debuff the enemy/crowd control them.

A good early game spell is the cleric spell “bless” it gives 3 people in your party (potentially including the caster) a 1-4 point bonus to attack rolls and saving throws. So your chance to hit is higher now, and your chance to avoid spell effects and sometimes damage is also higher.

Just keep in mind there is a resource for certain spells, Bless uses concentration, so the spell will end prematurely if the caster uses another concentration spell or takes damage and fails their constitution saving throw (but if they blessed themself they get that 1-4 point bonus).

In the early game before you get decked out in fancy equipment and get your first few important levels you should rely on buffing your team members so that the high damage melee and ranged characters can be more effective.

Another big thing is positioning. Your enemy has a big axe, and you’re trying to fire a bow and lob a ranger spell at them - after you fire your shot, move your character further away from them - they might potentially waste a turn just trying to catch up to you.

Don’t sleep on throwable stuff early game - it is often much more difficult for enemies to avoid that damage than it is for them to dodge a regular attack.

Also firing a ranged attack to an enemy on high ground will make it harder to hit them, firing down on someone on lower ground makes it easier to hit them.

I find throwables invaluable for dealing with enemy ambushers that my entire party failed to locate with perception checks. I can usually guess where the ambushers are located so throwing explosives in the general area will reveal them. This is preferable over walking into the ambush blind and getting my ♥♥♥♥ pushed in for 1-2 rounds because of surprise.

Big help early game is having Bless from a Cleric or Paladin. It always works and boosts your chances to hit.

Take high ground (climb a hill, go to the roof etc) for ranged attackers. This applies to spell casters, too, not only bows and crossbows.

These are couple very easy things to try and help your combat, hard to give more advice without more context.

If you have no idea of what you are doing, use few classes based on spells ( incredible tools, but limited so you need to know when to use them) and go with melee weapons.

If you have decent strengh, jump. It allows you to go futher than walking.

Use you health potions and throw them to help downed character (don't directly target them or the impact will kill them)

Learn the strengh of the classes you have and use it every turn (ex: rogue have one powerful attack when they attack someone engaged with one of your other character, so make it happen.)
Get a big sword and go whacking.

Get Lae'zel, give her a sword, and have her just start swinging it at people. That will give you some pretty good results.

Remember that magic missile always hits, although at the start of the game it hits very weakly, so use it to finish off enemies who are already wounded. Wizards don't start out being able to deal a lot of damage at low levels. (By the time they get to high levels they are very powerful.)

Shadowheart has one good damage attack early game (guiding bolt), but it doesn't always hit, so sometimes it is better to save her spells for healing. Bless is also probably a good choice, but to be honest, I almost never use it. About 95% of the time I am too impatient and just want to use offensive spells rather than do things like buff my team.

Try to not clump all your characters together, because that makes them vulnerable to area of effect attacks.

1. Scout. If you look around in stealth (Astarian is very good at this) you will often find out things about the encounter set up/geography that can be exploited in various ways to give you a big advantage. Larian are famous for designing alternative approaches into battles and almost always the most obvious ones are the hardest.

2. Exploit environmental objects mercilessly. Chandeliers that can be shot to drop on enemies. Explosive barrels. They go BOOM!. Larian love explosive barrels, you'll usually find a few around. If you do it's worth picking them up and placing them in strategic positions before a fight. BOOM BOOM!. Occasionally BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM! Nice.

3. Use spells and consumables that hamper enemies' movement. In the early game Grease is a useful one (you find bottles of this lying about). Ice spells are extremely useful 'cos they can make enemies prone. If you see a water barrel, have someone shoot it and then someone else cast a Ray of Frost cantrip on it. Ice rink. Prone enemies can't hurt you and are much easier for you to hit.

Never underestimate the power of a well placed level 1 spell. Baldurs Gate 1 tooltip.

4. Examine Shadowheart's spell list very carefully. She has many Level 1 spells that will make big difference although that may not be obvious to you. One of them is Bless. At level 1 she can boost three companion's attack rolls by 1D4 with that. That's a 5-20% buff to chance to hit. Nice.

5. Do not hoard consumables (scrolls, elexirs, potions etc). Look at what you've got and use them. They make a big difference, much more than you may think. You'll find plenty more and you will be able to make tons of potions and elexirs yourself.

6. When planning an encounter look for any ways that you can gain Advantage for your companions and/or impose Disadvantage on your enemies. Advantage/Disadvantage is probably the strongest buff you can give yourself in the game. It represents about a 15-20% improvement in your chance to hit. The are many ways to gain advantage (height advantage for example), you need to learn what all these are and mercilessly exploit them to the best of your ability.

7. Focus, focus, focus. It is much better to kill one enemy outright than it is to just damage three. A damaged enemy can hit you just as hard on their turn but dead enemies don't get no turns.

8. In tandem with focusing, use positioning to minimise/slow down the rate at which the enemies can attack you. Sometimes you can hit, retreat, hit, retreat and focus 'em down one at a time. There are lots of other positioning techniques. Positioning/movement is very important. This is not just a stats game.

9. Quite often Astarian can do a bit of stealth sniping. He can sneak into range of an enemy, shoot them and retreat behind cover then use his bonus action to go back into stealth mode. Poor saps won't be able to find him. Rinse and repeat. Very good way to even the odds a bit when it's possible.

Lastly if you are getting your arse handed to you in a particular battle it is incredibly educational to watch an expert player beating it on Youtube. You will be astonished at the things they do that you've never thought of. You will also probably see them using spells and abilities you don't have because you didn't know about them so it will also help a lot with your builds and equipment selections. Once you've got Withers back at camp you can respec if necessary to grab stuff you saw someone use that you like.

Good luck! :steamhappy:

Dont neglect Bless, its a very good enhancer in early levels with low hit chances, as it buffs the hit ability of everyone. You can ignore it after lvl 5+

You can also just use throw to chuck an explosive red barrel at enemies should you find one too close to your proximity.

Also, OP's name checks out.

Right, it's not like those are scarce or anything...
