How buggy is the game now?
I've not played the game yet because I've been waiting for a relatively bug free experience. I don't want NPCs glitching out with inaccurate dialogue or quests that don't work or respond to your choices properly.

Seeing their patches fix over 1000 bugs doesn't fill me with confidence.

I'm wondering what's the current state of the game in terms of bugs, big and small?

Thanks.

Without sounding like a sarcastic smarmy troll... like you got in some replies here.. *coughs* Realistically give it a couple more patches. They've talked about some new optimization coming in soon-ish as well as an Honor-Mode in the works. If you understand some bits of development you'll know the lingo of 'Patch Pipeline'. These current patches were probably around in the works around release-date. With them also juggling multi-platform releases.. its kinda messy.. it'll get there though.

The game is very front-loaded, meaning Act 1 and Act 2 are pretty polished, more so with Act 1. Act 3 is a bit of a mess and a big hit/miss depending on who you are asking. On my decent system it's given me issues.. and the people saying their are none are really just being contrarian. You can LOVE something and also point out flaws. You'll get occasionally animation glitches, there is 1 known bug with Tiefling children in the Grove area.. and a few smaller things that shouldn't really break gameplay (Wyll's quest can sometimes break entirely though, but it super random/rare).. Those are some specific things.

You can easily get around 50-100 hours out of the first 2 acts alone if you like to explore every little corner, do every little quest and detour for side things. If you also like messing with classes and trying different combos and don't MIND restarting for that- you can get a lot of mileage out of the game for its price tag- IN SPITE of its flaws right now.

IT WILL stabilize, i'm sure. If you're going to mod, be sure to prevent the game from auto-updating by disabling it in steam to 'only update on launch' and then NEVER launch from steam- use the mod loader.

Okay just covering bases, dunno if it helps you at all. Personally, I'm on break.. despite being a total restart-a-holic even I got tired of having to restart a save again. I've hit 2 weird quest breaking bugs (reported what I could) before growing just disheartened with continue after companion animations kept getting glitchy.. But that's me. Your motivations may differ.

Act 3 REALLY is a hotmess for a lot of people, it may or may not be for you, but performance issues and tanking FPS is a very common report. This isn't the same for Act 1 or 2.. its like night and day. Big oof.

Wait another two years for you to get what you want.
Everyone else can enjoy the game as it is.
Most players do not even encounter significant bugs.

Not great, but getting better. Most of the quests seem to work. Act 3 isn't a stuttering mess. AI doesn't constantly time-out. Outside of the odd bad hotfix it seems to mostly work. There's still weird stuff that goes on (LOS issues, clicking issues, aggro/AI issues, Ethel might still be broken in Act 3) from time to time but it's not game breaking.

Fine until Act 3, then OMG. Even that is not unplayable, just very, very tiresome.

However, this seems to be something that can be patched relatively easily, so keep your eyes open for the next Hotfix.

is shield bash broken, also crafting components don't stack and trying to combine manually fails.
still best game ever made since bg1

my ssd is full so i get some performance trouble on act 3 but if you download the game on your ssd i don't think you will have major problems. unless you use mod i suppose.

The game is totally playable. There are still some edge case issues but most players won't come anywhere close to them.

Act 3 worked fine for me on release. There were some glitchy bits, but nothing terrible. Now the game lags horrendously in some parts.
Act 3 has unacceptably poor performance for me. This is a new development as it used to be acceptable although worse than the first two acts although maybe that's just because of the area I'm in now? But I feel like the recent hotfixes have made things much much worse for me.

As in the performance in act 3 for me is way worse than act 1 early access years ago.

Performance is all over the map, depending on who you ask. I've luckily encountered very few bugs, even in Act 3.
Shells Nov 24, 2023 @ 7:28am
If you make a fresh install right now, the game will literally and technically stop working at the beginning of act 3. This accounts for all playthroughs that have been started with patch 4 and hotfix 11 installed. People who started their game with patch 3 do NOT encounter the game stopping bugs (party members not following anymore, commands not being registered by the engine) at the beginning of act 3.

Apart from these blockers, there are still thousands of minor and major bugs but no stoppers present. The UI, the inventory, party management and the camera are all terrible and (camera) partly unusable. The plot and the cinematics have logical bugs (double playing the same stuff, playing wrong cinematics), missing voice overs and disappearing characters. Finally the performance is still problematic in populated areas where lots of characters are shown.

All in all, the game is riddled by a plethora of bugs and miles away from being finished. Larian's update policy is a chore with all those known issues not being taken care of over months and months. Wait for the Definitive Edition and you may get a finished game in a year or two!

so youre saying we should wait 2 whole years for a relatively bug free experience, yet at the same time most players dont even encounter any significant bugs?

i see...
